History: I imported this car from South Carolina in 1992. I have the original importation approval papers as required. The car was originally a green on green colour combination (not so nice), but when the restoration was undertaken in 2006 the decision was made to go with the factory Mulsanne Blue on Light Saddle combination. Both of these were colour options for the 1970 model year. With the white soft top I believe this makes a very appealing colour combination. The car had a complete body-off restoration eight years ago, and has seen an average of 1500km per year since. It is just like a brand new car (from 1970!).
Restoration Overview: As mentioned above the car had a complete body-off restoration. I have documented photos and receipts for all of the restoration. No corners were cut with the restoration of the car - every part is either new or restored. The car has been restored to a very original looking condition, though with no intension for it to be a NCRS type vehicle. The main items that veer away from original is the replacement of a GenV engine, Hooker Headers, VBP Fibreglass Rear Spring, MSD HEI Distributor and up-rated headlights and relays. The car has been setup to cruise, it glides along the freeways and highways very smoothly and comfortably. I use it regularly as my work transport. But it can and does regularly navigate city traffic with ease, and can handle hot days without ever overheating thanks to the full original cooling system setup.
Driveline: The engine was fully rebuilt with the intention to leave options for future up-rating of power. Key internals are Chevrolet Steel Crank, Scat Forged Conrods, Keith Black Forged Pistons, Speed-Pro Rings, Clevite Bearings, Rectangular Port Heads, Correct LS-5 Dual Plane Intake Manifold, Hooker Headers, High Volume Oil Pump, High Flow Water Pump, Holley 750 Vac-Sec Carb. Compression ratio is 9.8:1. The camshaft is a very mild Chevrolet unit with .500’ lift and 220 duration. The engine has lots of piston to valve clearance .110” intake and .230” exhaust, so there is scope to easily install a bigger camshaft - which would really bring the engine alive. Cooling is provided by a new factory 5-core radiator and original clutched fan and shroud. TH400 transmission was fully rebuild, it has Raybestos Heavy Duty clutch plates, a stage 2 shift kit, and stronger sprag clutch. Shift is firm but very smooth. The differential was rebuilt last year with brand new 3.08 gears and new posi-trac clutches and bearings and seals. Tail-shaft has new universal joints and was balanced, same goes for the half shafts.
Suspension: At the front all the syuspension parts were bead blasted and painted in GM chassis black. New control arm bushes upper and lower, ball joints, KYB gas shockers, VBP 550lb coil springs. Up-rated front sway bar with poly link bushes fitted. At the rear a VBP Fibreglass rear spring 330lb, matching KYB gas shockers, new trailing arm bushes, diff mount bushes, heavy-duty adjustable track rods. Up-rated rear sway bar with poly link bushes fitted. The rear training arms were fully rebuilt with new bearings, shims and seals. The ride is firm without being harsh.
Steering: Steering Box overhauled, new Power Steering Pump fitted, new Power Steering hoses (x4), new Power Steering Control Valve, rebuilt Power Ram, new Tie-rod Ends. Steering Column was rebuild with new bearings and new Rag Joint. Steering Wheel is a reproduction of the original wheel though 1inch smaller and with a thicker and more comfortable padded rim.
Brakes: New Brake Rotors all round, new Wheel Bearings and seals, rebuilt Brake Calipers with stainless steel sleeves, new Brake Hoses, new Brake Pads, rebuild Hand Brake assembly including drum shoes, rebuild Brake Power Booster, new Master Cylinder. All the brake lines have been replaces with new new steel items.
Body: Minor repairs carried out and prepped as required for new paint. New deck lid fitted due to de-lamination of old one. Painted in two-pack in Mulsanne Blue. Brand new white hood fitted over rebuild and re-painted soft-top frame. Front and rear bumpers and bumper extensions re-chromed. All bumper mounting irons and bolts either restored or replaced as required. All stainless trim work was repaired and professionally polished as required. New front indicator lenses and up-rated headlight globes with twin headlight relays. All exterior badges and logo’s replaced with new items. Every rubber and seal replaced with new items, including doors, windows, soft top hood, windscreen, and under bonnet and radiator seals. The cabin and rear compartment floors are covered in acoustic mating to reduce road noise and resonance.
Chassis: The chassis was bead blasted to bare metal and zinc coated before being finished in GM chassis black. The fuels tanks was cleaned and repainted with new straps fitted. Five new Mastercraft tyres fitted on original Corvette rims refinished in original silver/grey. New wheel trims and restored centre caps fitted. New battery has also been fitting this year. New battery cabling also fitted during the restoration.
Interior: As the original interior suffered most, everything has been pretty much replaced with new. This includes; Carpets front and rear, Seat Cushions, Seat Covers in original style including Echions. Both forward and rear Console halves replaced with reproduction items. New Heater and Vent Controls, restored Gauges, new Dash-Pad, new Sun Visors, new A Pillar trims, restored Dash Facia panels, original Delco AM/FM Radio refurbished, new original style speakers, new Ignition Inter-lock cable, Shifter re-built, new Shifter Plate assembly. All the venting and heating systems rebuild and re-sealed.
As you can see by the pictures and the extensive list above, this car has been spared nothing during its life with me. I have a very fat folder of receipts as proof of the above. Along with many photos taken during the restoration. The car is one of 6,648 convertibles made in 1970 and one of only 4473 LS-5 big block cars in 1970. It is the most powerful 454ci year as they went down every year from 1971 onwards (not counting the LS6 - but they are super rare with a price to match). This is not the cheapest Corvette on the market, nor the most expensive, I believe I am asking a reasonable price for a car of this quality and presentation - hence please do not contact me with unrealistic offers. Anyone who has owned a Corvette will understand and see the amount of work and money involved in bringing a car up to this standard.
More than happy to show the car to serious interested buyers, but I will reserve the right to refuse a viewing and/or test drive based on my perceptions of the buying being seriously in the market for a Corvette. Please bid to buy, don't waste my time or your own if you are not serious - as you will be reported to ebay.
The car is currently on Vic Club Permit - it will be sold un-registered with no RWC.
