Lorsque Charles de Montalembert, en 1836, publie son premier livre, La Vie de sainte Elisabeth de Hongrie, duchesse de Thuringe (1207-1231), il n'a que vingt-six ans. Dans un style incomparable, il esquisse la biographie d'une sainte du mile siecle qui conjugue naissance royale, amour des pauvres et de la pauvrete, vie conjugale heureuse et ideale de chastete, enracinement medieval et exemplarite universelle. Henri-Dominique Lacordaire avait vu juste La Vie de sainte Elisabeth est bien l'un des piliers, disons au moins l'un des reperes, de la reconquete catholique du XIXe siecle. Le jeune Montalembert s'y est efforce de retrouver le Moyen Âge chretien, meconnu et meme ridiculise par les siecles precedents. Sa longue introduction, qu'il a laissee inchangee dans toutes les editions, a pour but de presenter les grandeurs du mile siecle. Il en fait un portrait qui, pour etre apologetique, ne manque ni de charme ni de grandeur. La presente edition reprend celle que publierent, en 1876, les libraires Bray et Retaux. Le texte ne cessa pas d'etre reedite au XIXe siecle, avec quelques amenagements du temps de Montalembert lui-meme. En 1903, le libraire Retaux en etait a la vingt-deuxieme edition. C'est donc un best-seller catholique qui est repris ici, en notre temps qui a une vision peut-etre moins romantique et moins " poetique " du Moyen Âge, mais qui sait que cette periode de notre culture occidentale ne saurait etre comprise sans la dimension religieuse et mystique que Montalembert a eu, en son temps, le merite de privilegier.
When Charles de Montalembert, in 1836, publishes its first book, the Life of holy Elisabeth of Hungary, duchess of Thuringe (1207-1231), it has only twenty-six years. In an incomparable style, it outlines the biography of holy mile century which combines royal birth, love of the poor and poverty, happy and ideal married life of chastity, medieval rooting and universal exemplariness. Henri-Dominique Lacordaire had seen just The Life of holy Elisabeth is well one of the pillars, say at least one of the reference marks, the catholic reconquest of the 19th century. The Montalembert young person endeavoured there to find the Christian, ignored Middle Ages and even ridiculed by the previous centuries. The purpose of Its long introduction, which it left unchanged in all the editions, is to present the sizes of the mile century. It makes of it a portrait which, to be apologetic, fails neither of charm nor of size. The present edition takes again that which published, in 1876, the booksellers Bray and Retaux. The text did not cease being republished at the 19th century, with some installations of the time of Montalembert itself. In 1903, the Retaux bookseller was with the twenty-second edition. It is thus a catholic bestseller which is taken again here, in our time which less has a vision perhaps less romantic and ?poetic? of the Middle Ages, but which knows that this period of our Occidental culture could not be understood without religious dimension and mystic that Montalembert had, in his time, the merit to privilege.
