Starting off with the front of the box, you can see it has the color scheme that Cooler Master uses for a lot of their products, purple and white — or as we like to label it, elegant and clean. Not only does the front of the box give you your first initial viewing of the Notepal X3 itself. It also informs you that there is “Elegant LED Lighting” as well as support for Notebooks up to 17″, which let’s be honest here, how many people actually own Notebooks larger than 17″.
Honestly there is a little more info you could possibly need on the cooler itself. Besides just giving you the tech specs on the back of the box, Cooler Master also has several photos’ showing exactly what the Notepal X3 looks like from all angles.
Removing the Notepal X3 from the box, you can see that it comes in a plastic bag with two pieces of Stryophome on the sides.
There are only other two things that come in the package. The User Guide, and the USB to Mini USB power cable for the Cooler. The USB Cable is roughly 2ft long. We actually had to run the cable underneath the cooler itself due to the fact that our USB’s are on the right side of our laptop and the USB power on the Notepal X3 is on the left, but the cable was long enough to reach with extra cable to spare. The User Guide is your standard black and white guide, although it does come in about 1,000 languages, but that is something you expect from Cooler Master.
Closer look
Now onto the Notebook Cooler itself. Looking at it from a top-down perspective, it’s comprised of mostly plastic, with a large aluminum grill over the top of the whopping 200mm fan. There is a vent in the front that is supposedly going to keep your hands cool as you game or type or whatnot. Here is a closeup on the large 200mm Blue Led Fan, as well as a closer look at the Cooler Master emblem, the aluminum grill, and the blue accent strips. And here is what the LED’s look like when on. They’re not overly bright, and have a nice blue hue to them (not that harsh blue color you get from cheap LED’s)
The fan used in the X3 is a whooping 200mm in diameter. Like most fans of this size this one also spins rather slow which would be 500-850 RPM. The flow of air is between 65 and 76.5 CFM. And it stays quiet only producing 16-23 dBA of noise. It illuminates a nice blue glow when powered on it.
The X3 uses the fan for more than just cooling a laptop but the user themselves. At the bottom of the cooler is an outlet that allows some of the air produced by the fan to exit towards the user’s palm.
The left side of the Notepal X3 consists of all your buttons and plugs. You have a USB Out, to replace the USB used on your Laptop, (nice touch Cooler Master) as well the USB In, which is of course for the power cable, Fan Speed wheel, Fan On/Off Switch, and LED On/Off Switch.
With the top and sides covered, that leaves only one angle left to inspect, the bottom. There’s not a whole lot to see on the bottom, but this is where the cooler is actually made effective. Not only are there large strips cutout of the bottom so that the fan can breath, there is also two large fold out feet that help elevate the Cooler so that is not only ergonomic for using your laptop, but also to help improve the airflow to the fan even more. There are also two rubber feet at the bottom so that the cooler will sit firmly on whatever surface you choose to place it on, and will not slide around.
Ergonomics
The design of the Notepal is great especially for those that maintain a focus on ergonomics while they use their laptops or netbooks. The best part about this device is that it does support big laptops. We have a 17-inch HP Pavilion DV7 and before using this product, we would have a ton of problems putting the laptop in certain areas because the amount of heat it would emit that, would become very cumbersome and unbearable. Connecting this device and utilizing the ways that it imports cool air and exports the hot air through its exhaust was a blessing. We also noticed a severe drop in temperature produced from the use of our laptop. It went from unbearably hot to a lukewarm feel that really is unnoticeable.
The way your laptop is position on the device with the flaps down on the back allows you to obtain the right angle that you are looking for when typing and using the screen.This angle allows you to be comfortable while working on long-winded essays or papers, all the while staying in a cool environment. Its honestly is one of the most helpful aspects of the device.
Final Thoughts
The Notepal X3 is a silent fan laptop-cooling pad made by Cooler Master. At first glance, it might seem like the usual run of the mill-cooling pad, but when you look at it more carefully, it is much more than that. The device features a silent 200mm fan with blue Led lights that actually look very pleasurable to the untrained eye. There are also buttons on the left hand side of the device that can control the lighting and fan for use. A fan speed dial controls fan speed and a USB jack to plug the fan to the laptop, which will act as a power supply.
The device works very well to keep your laptop cooled to a temperature that you will not recognize. You can really tell the difference when it is in use and when it is not. What is also great about this little device is the fact that you also have an area to put wires so that they are out of the way. The lighting is also great as you have blue led lights that are very nice to look at. The design of the cooling pad is also very splendid. It has a glossy build with a smooth texture that is extremely lightweight. It is comparable to putting a laptop on a pillow or some soft cushion surface. The only way that you know the device is there is by the slight angle of your laptop. What is new to this version of Notepal is the cooling for hands in the front of the device.
This works well if you get sweaty palms or just need to give your hands a break from the heat. There are front vents were you could just rest your hands in front and feel the cool air. It really helps in certain situations. This is a great accessory for anyone needing a way to cool down there laptop and themselves for an affordable price.
