This game takes me back to the days when video games were a challenge and didn't hold a persons hand the whole game. There is no difficulty selection. The only difficulty level is HARD. This game rewards patience and strategy. It will punish those who try to button mash and play like it's God of War or something similar. This game combines the best elements of action and rpg style game play. You can level your character up with the "souls" that you receive for defeating enemies, and your character can don all different types of weapons and armor. You can also level up your weapons and armor with the "souls". The other great feature of this game is the online aspect of it. There really isn't any multiplayer to be had here. You can get help from random people playing while they are in "Soul Form". You can also invade another players game and try to kill the other player for "souls" as well as some other rewards. Don't let the punishing difficulty that many people claim about this game scare you off. It is a challenge, but with patience and some skill, anyone can master the games mechanics. I am an avid gamer and i moslty play rpg's and action/adventure titles. I can honestly say that this is the most enjoyable and challenging game i have played since the days of the orginal NES. Do yourself a favor. If you enjoy epic rpg/action games and want to be challenged, buy this game. This is truly one of the best games to come out in a long time and is also one of the best games of all time. Challenge yourself and see just how good your gaming chops really are. You will feel like a gaming pro after playing and beating this beast.Read full review
I had noticed the great reviews for this game, and though they mentioned its surprisingly difficult, I decided to go for the challenge. The graphics are very good, havent noticed much clipping. I'm about 15 hours into the game. Fighting is rather difficult if you try to hack n slash; you'll die a lot, and its usually your fault. This game requires strategy and patience. The variety of enemies is pretty vast; each with its own strengths/weaknesses. The online component is also very unique!! You can see people's bloodstains (where others have died)when activated you see their "red ghost" the last seconds he was alive, indicating potential threats up ahead. You can also leave/read other people's messages on the ground letting you know what to do or what to expect. I havent done it yet, but I know you can join or others can join your game to fight alongside. I have read that once you read a certain level you can enter someone else' game and kill them. The deluxe edition comes with an artbook and music soundtrack. The artbook is nice; I have yet to hear the music. The strategy guide is very deep, it covers just about every aspect of character/weapon customization to the easiest ways to defeat enemies. The walkthrough is straightforward but I've noticed online that other players skip around levels. Overall I give Demon's Souls Deluxe Edition a rating of Excellent! This game only gets deeper and to get all trophies you must give it several run throughs.Read full review
Write a review for "Demon's Souls" is a tough thing. I mean, there are so many reviews on this game already published on the net that you have more than a hell of a choice to make yourself a good idea of this software. So, let's make this a short text and point out what makes this one of the greatest games of the year, if not of this whole generation. I've been in gaming since NES times (beginning of the eighties) ant what striked me almost immediately is this kind of atmospheric feeling this game developps along your journey. Story is limited to an essential core: you are a demon slayer, you have to save and unite the world. Doesn't this kind of minimalism remind your of this good 8/16 consoles (Nes, Genesis, Super Nes)? In those years, games were hard because there were no other choice to make it feel long. Well, Demon's Souls IS a long game that is hard by design, and not because it has to feel longer. The result of this is that, more than in any other game, you truly value your life, you truly think it twice before you attack almost anything that crawls towards you. And now the best part: enemies are hard to beat, but if you do it right, they'll die quickly. And that's the point. They can kill you as fast as you can, which makes the whole experience truly realistic. A sword hit must be blocked, or at least partially avoided avoided in order to survive. In one word, you learn to value your life AND you even learn to value the life of, let's say an enemy player that fought bravely against you. You'd maybe think I am overdoing it, but there is no doubt this game brings a sort of compassion mood to the whole experience. The difficulty is really something not many gamers have known in this generation gaming times, but you know... It's really nice to see that this kind of wind, a warm breeze for me, can still blow today. Remember the times when you played games because you loved them, you got truly involved in what you accomplished? If your answer is positive, then you already know what you'll have to face when you decide to start your journey. Unlike many other reviews, my final word is that anybody should, at least, give this game a good try. I mean, beat the first level. Only from this point will you be able to take a true decision about this game's feeling. All in all, I already bought this game twice (Asian and American versions). I am also ready to buy the European version if it ever comes out. Why is that? Because this software is a piece of history comparable to Mario or Castlevania series. But as I said. Try playing it, and see for yourself if it worth of your time. Love it or hate it, but at least, give it a good try.Read full review
Non-stop continuous play. Something new in a video game!! Everything counts. Dying is part of the game, and a bad decision cannot be taken back. For example, you cannot save before you enter a room, and than if the room is too hard for you, just load your save from before the room. To me, this put me on the edge of my seat whenever I play. It makes it so much more realistic. You are trapped in the "Nexus" --- a sort of netherworld/pergatory. You have two forms, (1) Body and (2) Soul. You can never truly, die, but only be sent back to your soul form. The Nexus has 5 worlds, each with 4 boards --- each board with a major boss. When living, you are easier to detect, but have full HP. In soul form, you are more stealthy, and you only have about 1/2 HP. Be ready to play a lot of the game in Soul Form. Realism. You cannot take back actions, so you cannot just run head-long into a group of enemies, or around a blind corner. You have to act like you really care about dying, and proceed with caution at all times on a new area. Basically, think --- "if you were really in some unknown cave, how would you be moving?" Would you just run around a blind corner? Not for all - game can be hard and frustrating, since you will play boards over many times before you beat them. (Like old-school games, you have to beat the board straight through, and if you die, you go back to the start!!) BUT -- everythign you do is SAVED!!! So if you play a board, and collect a bunch of items, and keys, and open some secret doors...but then die, all of that is still saved. You still have all the items, and the doors are all open. The doors will often be shortcuts, so you have a quick way to get back to where you were when you died. When you die, you lose your "souls" and leave a "bloodstain" --- souls serve as gold and experience for leveling up and buying items. This is the frustrating part, but if you are careful, you can get back to where you died and touch your bloodstain, and pick up all the souls you dropped. But if you die first, they are lost forever. Be warned, this will happen several times in your first few boards, at least. ONLINE (optional)- When you play, you are logged in, and playing online. Again, something totally new. Use this wisely!! You can leave messages and read messages for other players, which will often warn of tough enemies or hidden traps. Also, when people die, they leave bloodsrains -- by touching someone elses bloddstain, you can see how they died, which is also a very useful warning --- especially for hidden traps, or fall-offs on dark boards. ONLINE Combat - Also, you have the ability to (1) summon another player for help (very useful on bosses), (2) leave a sign so that you can be summoned by another, or (3) Invade another's game and hunt them. Online is optional - If you do not like the online (some hate the fact that another player might invade and kill them)--- just do not log into the PS network, and you will play off-line. Overall - I love this game. Great combat action, but not button-mashing, much more strategic and realistic. Difficult, but rewardingly addictive. Edge of my seat when exploring new boards. Unique online elements. CON - One con --- The "World tendency" which is another element, strictly for rare-item hunting, is glitchy, and has problems --- particularly if you play online.Read full review
I cannot say enough great things about Demon's Souls. Love the customization and soul leveling system. I recommend this game and now I have the Deluxe Edition which is very cool. Rare also.
