What is Clicker Training ?
Clicker training is a very effective form of reward based training which is rapidly gaining popularity all over the world.
It is more commonly known as a method of training dogs but is also used to train other domestic animals such as horses, chickens, cats, rabbits, goats etc as well as less approachable animals in zoos or wildlife parks.
A clicker is a small plastic item with a button on the top. When the button is pressed it makes a click click sound.
How does it work ?
The clicker is a signal that your dog has just done the right thing
and a reward is coming.
How does your dog know this ?
The first step in clicker training is to help your dog associate between the sound
of the clicker and a reward.
To begin with, take a handful of tasty treats, click and then immediately give your dog a treat. You are not asking him to do anything at this stage, just teaching him that the sound of the click means a reward is about to follow.
Once your dog has made the association, you can then begin to use it in your training.
As soon as your dog has done the right thing, click.
You then have a few seconds to give him the reward.
What are the benefits ?
There are several:
The sound is clear to your dog and therefore it helps him avoid confusion and makes it easier to learn.
All members of the family can use it, so training is more consistant.
Once the timing of the click is accurate, you have a little extra time to give the reward.
How do you progress ?
As with any other type of training, you gradually ask your dog to work harder for each reward, or in this case, each click and reward.
What if my dog ignores the click ?
This just means that he has not made the association that a click predicts something good. Click and treat him several more times, ensuring that the treats are something he really enjoys.
Final Points for successful Clicker Training
Do not point the clicker at your dog or click it close to him.
If your dog seems scared of the click try muffling the noise to begin with or click it behind your back.
Everytime you click you must reward.
The click is a marker to say "Hey you did the right thing" not an attention getter.
Make sure your timing is accurate or you will be marking the wrong behaviour.
Do not leave your clicker anywhere that your dog can chew or eat it.
and finally have fun with your dog !
