This is a South Australian story. Early in the 19th century, a British colony was proposed for a large part of the central southern sector of the continent of Australia. Unlike most of the other Australian colonies, this was not a convict settlement, but was conceived and fostered as a partly commercial enterprise. This South Australian company gave the area its unromantic, but geographically correct name, South Australia.

This story is about a family descended from Greek settler Yuri Tramoundanus (later George North) and his wife Lydia, and other forbears, Irish and Scottish, whose lives and strengths and frailties are all part of the pioneer kaleidoscope.

In particular, it tells the story of the McEvoy family from which Evelyn Nelson, nee McEvoy, has pieced together a picture of the years between early colonial days and the emergence and development of South Australia.
