Post Office directories provide a perfect basis for researching family or town history, usually including an alphabetical list of a town's or county's inhabitants which helps you easily find out where people lived at a certain time.

 

Most of the Scottish directories in this collection include a street directory and a trades directory which alphabetically list people by their address and professions.

 

Often you will also find Bank directories, listing banks and banking companies, Church directories which list clergymen and churches, a transportation directory listing railways, steamers, carriages, coaches and ferries, educational directories listing educational institutions and teachers, directories of insurance companies, judicial institutions and legal practitioners, medical and surgical institutions and practitioners, even MPs, post offices and postage rates and public institutions and societies.

 

And for many readers, the advertisements are one of the most interesting parts of the directory as they a rare insight into society and lifestyle at that time.
