This is not worth buying if what you want is a selection of Best of G&S; it's an oddly chosen selection of 4 or 5 numbers from Iolanthe, Gondoliers, Ruddigore, Yeomen & Mikado, not necessarily the best numbers from each operetta. The singers in the 1st 4 selections were the D'Oyly Carte soloists in 1970. I remember seeing them all at Sadler's Wells, where they were fine as singing actors (or acting singers!) But this disc exposes their vocal limitations. The Mikado extracts are from the D'Oyly Carte complete recording made a couple of years later, conducted by Royston Nash (NOT MALCOLM SARGENT in spite of what the sleeve says!) None of the singers is credited. The company's conductor in 1970 was James Walker, who presides well.
