OBD2 compliant cars. All cars in Australia have to be OBD2 compliant after Jan 2006. And between 1997 & 2006 is a lot of confusion, which vehicles had OBD2, and what is OBD2, do the Falcons & Commodores have it? Why won't an OBD2 Scanner work on my VT Commodore? It has the connector. Because the ADR rules did not require an active OBD2 system in Australia before 2006, MOST VEHICLE MANUFACTURERS did not switch it ON. And depending where the vehicle was to be exported to - they activated it - or not. Their choice.... If a vehicle was imported into Australia from the USA such as a Chrysler Jeep, it had OBD2 - period. Jeep had OBD2 worldwide. On the other hand -If Subaru send their vehicles to the USA it had OBD2, it had to be to get into the country, and When Subaru import into Australia - NO OBD2 as it was not required. They changed that in 2002 when they activated their OBD2 systems on all their vehicles into Australia.
You must remember -THERE WAS NO STANDARD HERE BEFORE 2006.
Falcons & Commodores -- AU - BA - VT - VX - VY they were getting closer. The OBD2 connector was there, and as each year went by, a little more of the OBD2 system was revealed. The BA & VY allowed LIVE ENGINE DATA to be viewed, but NO Fault Code recognition. BF & VZ have full OBD2 compliance; FG & VE have a world of information at hand. In 2000 Toyota built the AVALON in Australia and YES- it was OBD2.
The Scanner is only as good as the vehicle it is plugged into...
The secret to success is to use it as much as you can, and you will get confident with it. The Scanner is not a "MAGIC WAND” it is just another tool to help diagnose. If the Scanner does not communicate with the vehicle, it means exactly that, the vehicle does not have OBD2 enabled.

Even if you don't repair the vehicle yourself, knowing the Diagnostic Trouble Code number before taking the vehicle in for repair the less likely you will be ripped off. Once the vehicle is repaired, the Diagnostic Trouble Code(s) can be erased and the Check Engine light extinguished using this scan tool.
In area that requires a smog test, an illuminated Check Engine light fails the emission test, even if the repaired vehicle might otherwise pass inspection. This OBD II Scan Tool extinguishes the Check Engine light.
Remember, not all Diagnostic Trouble Codes illuminate the Check Engine light and a scan tool is the only way to obtain the information.
