Seller Notes: Incomplete and requires full restoration but it has been confirmed by VicRoads as being one of the rare HK utes that came with a factory fitted 307 Chev engine. Among other things it currently does not have an engine, gearbox, diff centre or rear axles. The condition of the body shell is best described as rough but restorable.

I purchased this ute several years ago as it had been described to me as having been one of the small number of Holden HK utes that were factory fitted with the 307 Chev engine.

While there was no engine fitted, it did seem likely that it was the genuine article as it had the correct hole in the firewall for the speedo cable, heat shield fitted above the muffler, larger diameter front coil springs and 2.78 LSD diff.

Then, late last year I was lucky enough to find an old registration lablel (with previous registration number still visible) under the seat.  A friend enquired about it at VicRoads and they subsequently issued a very informative "Certificate of Original Registration Details in Victoria" (see photo) which confirmed that when the ute was new it was First Registered at Kerang Police Station in Victoria on 7 June 1968 and was in fact fitted with a 307 engine.

A short time after this VicRoads confirmed to me that the engine that the ute was originally fitted with is not currently listed with them as being in a different vehicle.

When I thought things couldn't get much better, they did.  One day I was looking at the rear tray area and noticed that most of the screws holding down the plywood panel were either missing or very loose.  I gave the whole panel a pull backwards and could hardly believe what was hidden below.  Virtually all the engine parts from the 307 engine (except block and crank) had been neatly stacked/stored in the cavity below.  To this day I still haven't unpacked this area but just looking down into it I can see the following:

  • complete cylinder heads (x2)
  • rocker covers (x2)
  • inlet manifold
  • rams horn exhaust manifolds (X3).  (One is broken).
  • alternator and brackets
  • water pump, fan and pulleys
  • distributor
  • pistons and conrods
  • engine mounts
  • flexplate
  • timing cover
  • fuel pump
  • coil
  • oil filler tube and cap
  • dipstick and tube.

Other items hidden under the rear tray area include a pair of tail light assemblies, hub caps and some stainless trim.

It comes with four of the original slotted wheels with correct date codes (see pic of two). It also has the original bonnet, tailgate and even wheel spats that are all in good restorable condition.

Please note however that this ute is incomplete and is essentially a body shell with some original parts.  The body shell is rough and rusty but restorable.  It will require a dedicated enthusiast to see this through.  However, at the same time this is the basis of a very rare and highly desired vehicle with proof of identity and Holden collectors and specifically HK enthusiasts will already know this.

I strongly recommend that potential purchasers view the ute in person before bidding.

I have received several questions which I will try to answer below:

  1. The wheel spats are in excellent condition and do belong to this ute and will be sold with it unless the purchaser does not want them. (She would have been one cool cruiser getting around with these on).
  2. The front K-frame assembly and the front firewall are both in good sound condition.
  3. The tailgate is in very good condition with only surface rust (i.e. not structural rust).
  4. I can confirm that the diff centre was 2.78 LSD as I removed and inspected this myself on behalf of the previous owner (the diff housing remains in the ute).
  5. The original Victoria registration number (which I will disclose to the purchaser) is still available according to VicRoads, so it should be possible for the buyer to order these in if its going to go back on the road in Victoria.  (The ute only had the one registration number for its entire registered history).
  6. My mobile number is 0456 656 355.  No calls after 7pm please.

I've had more questions so I'll share the answers below:

  • The ute was originally fitted with a Powerglide automatic transmission.
  • It still has the bench seat, door trims and floor mat.
  • It still has all of the glass except for the windscreen.  The door glass (including vent windows) is still fitted and the rear window has been removed and is sitting on the seat.
  • The vehicle i.d. tags are still fitted.
  • The side stainless trim that goes on the lower body panel between the door opening and the rear wheel arch is still fitted on both sides and is in very good condition.
  • The date code on the steering box is 14 E 8 (i.e. 14/05/68).
  • There is a painted/stencilled number on the front crossmember as follows: 7435480.
  • The HK 307 ute is a much rarer vehicle than a 307 Monaro. It has been estimated that there were only 262 commercial vehicles (i.e. utes and panel vans) produced.
  • I can text photos to you if you text or call me on 0456 656 355 first.  I can't post any more photos on this ebay site as we have very slow computer speed now that we have used our high speed allocation for this month.
  • Finally, my location at Strathfieldsaye is near Bendigo in central Victoria.
