Although I like the design of this printer and its features seem excellent, I would recommend anyone thing of buying this printer check out the "Service Stall", This seem to be a common problem with this printer and even has a special area on the HP website describing it. Basically, if you cannot clear the error by powering off the printer, then it means there is a fatal hardware fault, and it needs to be returned to the factory. So do not buy any printer that is not currently under warranty. In fact you cannot buy an extended warranty from HP if it is not still under warranty, so don't get stuck with this printer which cannot be repaired elsewhere, like I did. I purchased an out of warranty but new machine and it developed this fault within 60 days, and after only 20 prints. This is not a printer to own without warranty.!Read full review
RUN- dont walk away from this printer. I've owned 2 bought new and they are HP's red headed step child. I would love 2 give it LESS than 1 star. Major problems. Printheads last 1 year and cost $65 each to replace- so 4 printheads = $260. And even with a new printhead installed, the printer will tell you to replace the printhead- it's faulty. It uses 8 separate ink tanks and each one is $38.95 = over $300 to refill all 8 inks. It goes through ink like water. Printer stops printing in the middle of a job if the printer thinks it's running out of ink. I have weighed the "empty" cartridges and the weight varies widely. You must leave the printer on ALL the time otherwise it goes through a 1/2 hour calibration set up each time you turn it on. And if you do leave it on, 3 times a day it goes through it's own mini calibrations that do use some ink. I could tell you so much more but STAY AWAY- even the hp techs agree with what I say. It was originally $500 new, every year 4 new printheads for $260, and to "fill her up" with ink will run you over $300. I was always told buy the best printer you can, it will save you on consumables (ink) BUT NOT THIS ONE. It's best use- as a boat anchor!!!! PLEASE BELIEVE ME & STAY AWAY!!!!!Read full review
Hewlett Packard's B9180 is considered by many to be the best Tabloid Printer ever made . This printer is unique not only in that it has individually replaceable Print Heads (Nozzles) independent from the 8 Color Ink cartridges , but in that it is the only Tabloid printer that has a built in Spectrophotometer that can maintain color fidelity by performing Closed Loop print color analysis and self calibration, without requiring user intervention, other than choosing self calibration , from the LCD Menu. These qualities have made this printer model the preferred printer for making Digital Negatives for Alternative Photographic Printing Processes such as Platinum Printing, Bromoil and Photo Gravure. It is an unfortunate thing that the very facts that made this printer so desirable also made it too expensive for Hewlett Packard to produce and compete with Asian imports . It is now discontinued.Read full review
Great printer I wish HP still made them.
Verified purchase: Yes
I admit when you first start to use this printer it is a bit overwhelming with the prithead calibrations and self test all you observe is the ink usage.Once you have all the kinks worked out the operation of the printer goes very smoothly. I have had the HP9180 printer for almost two years so I have learned how to obtain and replace print heads, cut the cost of the ink and how to get the most out of this printer. The print quality is great, with Adobe Photoshop the printing is almost effortless. I do not think there is another printer that will give you this print quality and variety photo print sizes that is cost effective for your needs.
