This interesting, accurate and detailed history of the growth and development of the city of Melbourne was written by Alfred S. Kenyon in 1934. Kenyon was a noted historian and President of the Historical Society of Victoria at the time of publication. He was also the author of several history books.

The book includes many areas of Melbourne's history from its 'finding', 'the real start' through to 'the present', including chapters on squatters, traders, 'the blacks' municipal beginnings, gold, the constitution, and the history of the port and railways. The book also includes several illustrations.

Written with much enthusiasm and love for Melbourne, this book is a useful, interesting and easy to read source for both family and local historians.
