If ever you wish to breed a certain colour this is THE guide! It e plains very well what the colour genes do and how to avoid certain risky colour 'mixtures'. I bought it for I am thinking of trying to breed a certain colour out of my mare. This book is just explaining, but the writer does that very well and in an objective way. She makes clear what you can do, or avoid, to get the desired colour. It's not a thick book, but it's written in comprehensive English, which, in my opinion, makes it a good investment and a short but clear reference guide.

I bought the book Horse Color Explained by Jeannette Gower a while ago, and I have to say it is an awesome guide for the novice. It describes and/or explains a wide variety of horse colors and coat patterns, as well as offers many colorful and detailed photographs. Even if you know nothing to begin with, you will be able to understand the details. It will even educate you about genetics, explaining what color can be expected in a foal, given a particular set of parents. The page on horse anatomy was quite helpful, as horse parts do not always correspond to human anatomical terms. It is particularly helpful when buying, selling, or customizing model horses, as it is a guide to understanding the language utilized in describing horse colors. (Yes, there is more to horse color than just brown, white and black!)Read full review
This is the very best book on horse color. The photographs are numerous and very well done; the text succinct - in short, this book is just about perfect. I have three books on the color of horses - Dr. Green's, Sponenberg/Beaver's and this one - and this is the one I refer to every time. Love it.
This book was recommended to me by several people...I have not yet finish reading the book, it is a reference book not one that will be read and the set on a shelf.
