Title: Asia Antiqua Cum Finitimis Africae Et Europae Regionibus
A terrific addition to any antique map collection or as a special gift. The quality and condition of this map is superb.
By: J. Jansson/Nicolas Blankaart
Description: A rare map of Asia from 1652. This is an incredibly interesting map of historical Asia which was intended to represent the region as it was known in antiquity. Full of fascinating historical references and notes.
While the continental outline reflects mostly contemporary cartography, there are some distortions particularly in Southeast Asia where Borneo is severely truncated, only Palawan (Palohan) of the Philippines is represented, and a partial coastline is delineated on Java (which is unnamed). Sumatra is named Taprobana as it often was confused with Ceylon ( Sri Lanka).
Japan is partially seen on very far right of map as Zipangri.
On the continent, there are a number of wildly inaccurate rivers, most notably the Ganges flowing through southern China in to the South China Sea!
There are numerous notations throughout the map relating to various myths and legends in antiquity. The map is adorned with a title cartouche, a dedication cartouche to Gerardus Schaep and twelve coins of various Roman Emperors.
Nicolas Blankaart was a professor at Leiden who created historical maps of the four continents for Jansson.
Condition: Fine, excellent condition. Original outline colouring.
Date: 1652. Published in Accuratissima Orbis Antiqui Delineation
