Kale – Mix

Unable to send to WA or Tasmania.

Kale is a leafy green biennial vegetable that is part of the Brassica family (which includes cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower etc).

This mix contains a min of 50 seeds from each of the following 4 varieties:

  • Black Tuscan Kale is often referred to as the tastiest and most nutritious of all kale (due to its dark green colour. The plants have long blistered dark green leaves which are also very attractive in the garden;
  • Red Russian Kale is an old favorite for its tenderness, sweet flavor, and nutritional value. An excellent red bunching Kale that retains its sweetness during warm weather and tolerates extreme cold. It has blue/green feathery leaves tinged with red along with purple veins;
  • Siberian Kale is ideal for raw salads as it has one of the most tender stems and leaves of any kale variety. It can also be lightly steamed. It has  light blue-green leaves with white stems and ruffled shape. Plants are hardy, fast growing and frost tolerant. If growing during hot conditions, protect plants from hot afternoon sun;
  • Dwarf Blue Curled Kale has bluish-green leaves that are curled on the edges and are tender and sweet with a mild flavour. Young leaves can be used in salads while older leaves steamed similar to spinach.

Kale has one of the highest levels of antioxidants of any vegetable. It is a very high source of vitamins A, C, B6 and K and is high in manganese, dietary fiber, copper, calcium, potassium and tryptophan.

Guide to Sowing Times

Sub Tropical

  • Winter crops need at least 5 degrees C to germinate and 3 hours of sunlight);
  • Young seedlings are not frost tolerant so some protection from frost is required until they are advanced;
  • Crops during hot summers will need some shade during the hottest part of the day);

Can grow in a variety of soils providing it is well drained and high in organic matter. Kale does best when pH of the soil is between 5.5 and 6.5. Kale requires moderate amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. In warmer climates, soil should be well mulched to retain moisture.

5 – 10 mm deep in seed trays and transplant. Minimum temperature required is 5 degrees C (germination will take up to 6 weeks). Germination will take approx. 1 week at 20 degrees C.

Sow direct to the garden or can be germinated in pots / punnets and transplanted with spacings of 30cm between plants and 50cm between rows.

Harvest: 30 days (salad) 50 days (full size).

Each pack contains a min of 200 seeds (50 of each variety).
