Crop Description:

Kale or borecole (Brassica oleracea Acephala Group) is a vegetable with green or purple leaves, in which the central leaves do not form a head. It is considered to be closer to wild cabbage than most domesticated forms.

Kales can be classified by leaf type:

·         Curly-leaved (Scots Kale)

·         Plain-leaved

·         Rape kale

·         Leaf and spear (a cross between curly-leaved and plain-leaved kale)

·         Cavolo nero (also known as black cabbage, Tuscan Cabbage, Tuscan Kale, Lacinato and dinosaur kale)

Because kale can grow well into winter, one variety of Rape Kale is called Hungry Gap, named after the period in winter in traditional agriculture when little else could be harvested.

Kale freezes well and actually tastes sweeter and more flavourful after being exposed to a frost.

Kale is very high in beta carotene, vitamin K, vitamin C, and rich in calcium.

When to sow: Please note the below are recommendations, I know many gardeners who break rules with great results by growing crops sheltered by others etc.  These are based on the many (yes there are many) garden guides that often have variations as well as feedback from my regular buyers and growers.  It’s all part of the fun
J but hop it helps.  Very frost tolerant so a good all year round plant.

There are many good online sites that I am sure you can find, if not email and I will help.  Gardening Australia (ABC show) and others are a great reference.

General Planting Tips:

·         As a general rules seeds need to be planted to a depth 1 ½ to 2 times their size for a good strike rate.

·         Factors influencing strike rate are moisture, temperature, seed quality, soil PH and temperature (and your green thumbs J )

·         Plant more seeds than required in an area.  This allows for seeds that don’t germinate or are eaten by insects.  Then thin/relocate some plants once they appear.

·         Against each seed type I place a recommendation on how easy it is to transplant, where hard it is heavily advisable to sow direct in the garden as the failure rate is likely to be high if you plant in a pot for later transfer.

·         For root crops (carrots, parsnip etc) remove rocks to help with straighter vegetable crops

·         My postage is free and postage is swift but if you want express postage I can accommodate that at Australian Post rates.
