Between the revolutions of 1830 and 1848, poverty reached new extremes in Germany, as in other European countries, and gave rise to a class of disaffected poor, leading to the widespread expectation of a social revolution. Whether welcomed or feared, it dominated private and public debate to a larger extent than is generally assumed as is shown in this study on the reflections in literature of the Social Question. A series of prominent German texts and authors from the early 1800s to the 1850s, from the proximity of the French Revolution to the aftermath of 1848 are examined. As a whole the book reveals how in the early and mid 19th century the Social Question - the spectacle of mass poverty and the prospect of social revolution - was a prime focus of interest and concern for literary authors, and for the educated classes they represented, throughout the German states and across the political spectrum. The predominant politicality of an era in literature which is often sen as tending to quiescence and withdrawal from public preoccupations is clearly and significantly displayed.
