MEET THE U.S. ARMY

by Louis MacNeice

first edition, HMSO, London, 1943

paperback (softcover), 24 pages + plates

One of the scarcest of the HMSO World War Two propaganda booklets, and, because of its famous author, probably the most sought-after by collectors. It was produced in an attempt to educate the British public about American attitudes and behaviour following the large influx of American troops into the country. "In order to know properly the American citizen, as represented in the U.S. Army, we must understand something of the background from which he comes and the differences between his outlook and way of life and ours. These differences are often small, but they are capable of causing misunderstandings, which must be avoided at all costs, since to foster misunderstanding between the two nations is one of the prime objects of Axis propaganda." Illustrated with 8 pages of black & white photo-plates.

Condition: A little light soiling and sunning to foot of front cover, staples rusty, and slightly chipped to spine. In Good condition.

A short note about World War II HMSO paperbacks

From 1941 until about 1947, His Majesty's Stationery Office (H.M.S.O.) published for the Ministry of Information, Air Ministry, and others, some sixty paperback books, aimed at both civilians and servicemen, and intended to explain the campaigns being fought by the Army, Navy and Air Force at the time. These well-written popular accounts were often published while the events they were describing were still going on. As such, they provide a fascinating 'first draft of history'.
Most of these books were written anonymously, although some were written by well-known authors. Most are illustrated with photographs and have evocative pictorial covers, although some have no illustrations and plain covers (these are usually more difficult to find as they probably sold in smaller numbers).
The series provides an interesting challenge for collectors
. Many of the books are still quite common and can be bought relatively cheaply. However, a significant proportion of the series are now pretty scarce and sought after by collectors. A handful of books in the series are very rare and can prove very difficult to track down!
