Caesar Against The Celts by Ramon L. Jimenez.

NOTE: We have 75,000 books in our library, almost 10,000 different titles. Odds are we have other copies of this same title in varying conditions, some less expensive, some better condition. We might also have different editions as well (some paperback, some hardcover, oftentimes international editions). If you don’t see what you want, please contact us and ask. We’re happy to send you a summary of the differing conditions and prices we may have for the same title.

DESCRIPTION: Hardback with Dust Jacket: 285 pages. Publisher: Castle Books; (1995). Never has a nation epitomized raw power more vividly than did Rome in the century before Christ. When Julius Caesar led his legions on a nine-year war of conquest to the north, he changed the course of European history and delayed the invasions of the east for five hundred years. “Caesar Against the Celts” takes the reader on each of Caesar’s campaigns in ancient France, Britain, and Germany, describing his battles on land and sea, including the invasions of England, the bridge across the Rhine, and sieges of numerous Celtic strongholds.

Though Caesar’s dangerous leap across the Channel to mysterious Britain was perhaps the most spectacular feat of his northern campaigns, the climax of the war occurred at Alesia, in central France. Here the young Celtic warrior Vercingetorix, commanding a huge coalition of rebellious tribes, finally surrendered to Caesar after an epic siege, only to be carted off to Rome in chains and put to death after his opponent’s triumphal parade.

Through the narrative are descriptions of the clothing, armor, weapons and tactics of Caesar’s devastating legionary army, as well as those of the Celtic tribes that covered Western Europe. This work also reflects the results of modern archaeological, linguistic, and historical research, including identification of the sites of many of Caesar’s battles, camps, and sieges.

Julius Caesar was, of course, his own war correspondent, leaving behind his “Commentaries on the Gallic War” as a unique record of these momentous campaigns. But modern scholarship suggests that his account of his battles in the north is less than the complete story, and that its rich detail masks a calculated political tract. “Caesar Against the Celts” presents the facts, the myths, and the speculations not only about what Caesar achieved, but also how and why.

The war against the Celts is described fully within the context of Caesar’s political career, and follows through to his ultimate success in Rome itself. The postscript, “The English Search for Caesar” examines the British Celts’ own history of their encounter with Caesar, as passed down through the centuries.

PUBLISHER REVIEWS:

REVIEW: A highly-acclaimed account of Julius Caesar's decade-long campaign against the Celts of Germany, Gaul and Britain. A fascination with Caesar’s Gallic campaigns has led Ramon L. Jimenez to explore every aspect of the subject, from Roman coins to Celtic languages. After a career in California state government, he has devoted himself to writing and research, including walking many of the actual sites of Caesar’s major battles.

PROFESSIONAL REVIEWS:

REVIEW: “Caesar Against the Celts” takes the reader on each of Caesar's campaigns in ancient France, Britain and Germany, describing his battles on land and sea, including the invasions of England, the bridge across the Rhine, and sieges of numerous Celtic strongholds. Though Caesar's dangerous leap across the Channel to mysterious Britain was perhaps the most spectacular feat of his northern campaigns, the climax of war occurred at Alesia, in central France. READER REVIEWS:

REVIEW: As a long-time teacher of ancient Greek and Latin, I am all too aware that most students today will never experience the joy of "hearing Caesar's voice" in his native tongue (and that others will never even muddle through a translation). What then is so wrong with a popular account of Caesar's campaigns, particularly such a delightful one as this? As one who has devoted my career (however humble) to promoting classical scholarship, I am proud to recommend this book to both ancient history enthusiasts and to any newcomers who may be inspired to learn more about the stories and languages of antiquity. Come. Read. Enjoy. And for the Visigoths among us, lighten up, okay?

REVIEW: Mr. Jimenez’s book is a very good overview of Caesar's campaign against the Celts. He does a fine job describing the tactics and strategies that Caesar utilized as well as the political environment, both in Gaul and in Rome, in which Caesar operated. This a good book to obtain an understanding of the Roman perspective in the Celtic Campaign. It is well written and the writing flows nicely.

REVIEW: A good general history to the Roman Gallic wars. I learned learn about the Romans at the time, their political intrigues, the Celts and their culture/history, the Roman frontier in Europe, the Roman conquests and losses, the soldier's life on a day-to-day basis, and Caesar's career among others. Readable, interesting and educational any reader, scholar or lay-person will find more to enjoy than to find fault. A gem and a value.

REVIEW: Excellent little introduction to our old friend Julius Caesar, the role model for Napoleon and many another big risk-taker. Much superior to reading Caesar's work itself unless you want to wade through a lot of political self-promotion. Books like this one do a lot to rescue ancient history from the dank cellar of its earlier scholarship.

REVIEW: A great read and very informative. I can now bring up Vercingetorix in casual conversation. One caveat: the maps could have been much better done. They are dark and hard to read and tend to precede the narrative somewhat, so they give away what little suspense there is. (OK, we know that Caesar ultimately prevails but he did lose a few along the way.) Read a few pages beyond each one and then go back.

REVIEW: I really liked the book, but I wish the author had gone into more detail about the Celts. It's very good reading and has really gotten my interest about what happened in Europe after the fall of Rome.

I always ship books Media Mail in a padded mailer. This book is shipped FOR FREE via USPS INSURED media mail (“book rate”). All domestic shipments and most international shipments will include free USPS Delivery Confirmation (you might be able to update the status of your shipment on-line at the USPS Web Site and free insurance coverage). A small percentage of international shipments may require an additional fee for tracking and/or delivery confirmation. If you are concerned about a little wear and tear to the book in transit, I would suggest a boxed shipment - it is an extra $1.00. Whether via padded mailer or box, we will give discounts for multiple purchases. International orders are welcome, but shipping costs are substantially higher.

Most international orders cost an additional $24.99 for insured USPS global priority mail (padded flat rate envelope) with delivery confirmation. Rates vary a bit from country to country, and not all books will fit into a USPS global priority mail flat rate envelope. Some international orders can be sent standard airmail for less. There is also a discount program which can cut postage costs by 50% to 75% if you’re buying about half-a-dozen books or more (5 kilos+). You can email or message me for a shipping cost quote, but I assure you they are as reasonable as USPS rates allow, and if it turns out the rate is too high for your pocketbook, we will cancel the sale at your request. ADDITIONAL PURCHASES do receive a VERY LARGE discount, typically about $5 per book (for each additional book after the first) so as to reward you for the economies of combined shipping/insurance costs. Your purchase will ordinarily be shipped within 48 hours of payment. We package as well as anyone in the business, with lots of protective padding and containers.

All of our shipments are sent via insured mail so as to comply with PayPal requirements. We do NOT recommend uninsured shipments, and expressly disclaim any responsibility for the loss of an uninsured shipment. Unfortunately the contents of parcels are easily “lost” or misdelivered by postal employees – even in the USA. That’s why all of our domestic shipments (and most international) shipments include a USPS delivery confirmation tag; or are trackable or traceable, and all shipments (international and domestic) are insured. We do offer U.S. Postal Service Priority Mail, Registered Mail, and Express Mail for both international and domestic shipments, as well United Parcel Service (UPS) and Federal Express (Fed-Ex). Please ask for a rate quotation. We will accept whatever payment method you are most comfortable with. If upon receipt of the item you are disappointed for any reason whatever, I offer a no questions asked return policy. Send it back, I will give you a complete refund of the purchase price (less our original shipping costs).

Most of the items I offer come from the collection of a family friend who was active in the field of Archaeology for over forty years. However many of the items also come from purchases I make in Eastern Europe, India, and from the Levant (Eastern Mediterranean/Near East) from various institutions and dealers. Though I have always had an interest in archaeology, my own academic background was in sociology and cultural anthropology. After my retirement however, I found myself drawn to archaeology as well. Aside from my own personal collection, I have made extensive and frequent additions of my own via purchases on Ebay (of course), as well as many purchases from both dealers and institutions throughout the world - but especially in the Near East and in Eastern Europe. I spend over half of my year out of the United States, and have spent much of my life either in India or Eastern Europe. In fact much of what we generate on Yahoo, Amazon and Ebay goes to support The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, as well as some other worthy institutions in Europe connected with Anthropology and Archaeology.

I acquire some small but interesting collections overseas from time-to-time, and have as well some duplicate items within my own collection which I occasionally decide to part with. Though I have a collection of ancient coins numbering in the tens of thousands, my primary interest is in ancient jewelry. My wife also is an active participant in the "business" of antique and ancient jewelry, and is from Russia. I would be happy to provide you with a certificate/guarantee of authenticity for any item you purchase from me. There is a $2 fee for mailing under separate cover. Whenever I am overseas I have made arrangements for purchases to be shipped out via domestic mail. If I am in the field, you may have to wait for a week or two for a COA to arrive via international air mail. But you can be sure your purchase will arrive properly packaged and promptly - even if I am absent. And when I am in a remote field location with merely a notebook computer, at times I am not able to access my email for a day or two, so be patient, I will always respond to every email.
