Perhaps the passage of time and the personality of the subject stop this from being compelling. The intertwining of Fausto's career, the people around him, and the context of how life in Italy in the 1940's and 50's affected both his career and demise made it a really worthwhile insight into the space in which this almost mythical cyclist lived. However, compared to, say, "Slaying the Badger" or "Pantani; Accidental Death of a Cyclist" the book doesn't quite capture the drama involved in Coppi's cycling career, war service, or personal life that is covered in a manner that is perhaps lacking a little passion.
