Having reawakened his own interest with classic Hawkwind during his mid-'90s spell with the Cleopatra label, Nik Turner reunited with fellow former members Huw Lloyd-Langton, Terry Ollis, and Thomas Crimble in 2000 for a live show that so painstakingly re-created the mood and momentum of an early-'70s Hawks show that it was difficult to believe some 30 years had galloped past since then. Recorded at two shows that same year, in Ystalyfera, Wales, and Birkenhead, England, 2001: A Space Rock Odyssey wraps up seven bona fide blasts from the past, but -- like the band they are re-creating -- does so with no regard for such niceties as nostalgia and reanimation. Rather, this is "Brainstorm," "Shouldn't Do That," "Master of the Universe," and "Spirit of the Age" as they should be experienced, loud and in your face, a roar of jet-fuelled adrenalin that doesn't simply take no prisoners, it even subjects the innocent to sonic attack. ~ Dave Thompson
