I have been playing a set of Nike 2006 Slingshot OSS irons (4-AW, Regular Flex, Steel Shaft) for about 3 months now and have reached the following conclusions. The Good - If you have trouble getting the ball in the air with your irons, then these clubs are for you. With the slingback design and low center of gravity, just get the clubface anywhere near the ball and it launches like a rocket. A high trajectory on an approach shot is great when trying to stick a green. The Bad - If you hit your old irons high, look elsewhere for a new set. These Slingshot irons are going to go even higher. This is the problem I ran into. I had been using a set of Nike NDS irons while learning the game but was topping and chunking too many shots. Since Nike positions the Slingshot OSS irons as a super game improvement set, I decided to give them a try. Because of the extra shot height you get with the OSS irons, I have lost 10-15 yards on every iron and have had to drop down 1 to 2 clubs to get the same distance I got with the NDS irons. My Conclusions: If you need help getting the ball in the air, then the Nike Slingshot OSS irons are for you. If you already hit a high shot, consider the Slingshot Tour irons or even the older Forged Pro Combo irons for a lower ball flight.Read full review
When I first ordered my Nike Slingshot OSS irons, 4-AW, I was apprehensive. I am a med-high handicapper who generates a lot of clubhead speed. After reading reviews about the Nike Slingshot OSS irons, it was a mixed bag. Some said they gained distance, some said they lost distance. I've never really been worried about distance , but ball trajectory interested me. When I started playing 5 years ago, I had no idea. But having played regularly since, I notice that despite my desire to hit a higher ball, I'm a low ball hitter. These irons have erased that. My ball flight is much higher and straighter than I had ever seen with my old irons (callaway steelhead plus knockoffs). It remains to be seen whether I have gained or lost distance, but the fact that I can now actually hit my 4 5 and 6 irons accurately and high enough to land softly is reassuring enough for me. Having now played three rounds with these clubs (one on a championship course that used to host a senior PGA event) I can honestly say that the potential for these clubs is sky high. Although I have issues with the grips (I’ll be regripping soon), the clubs themselves are astounding. Often on courses with narrow doglegs, holes that almost force the driver out of your hands, I was at a distinct disadvantage. I continually hit my four iron off the tee to great effect, to the tune of about 210-220 yards and deadly accurate. My best friend and golfing buddy who was riding with me obviously had expected me to tank it on this course because of my shaky iron play in the past. The shorter irons are just as accurate, and the weighting of the club plus the hot face equals high, soft landing shots. The greens that I hit (not as many as I would have liked, but that’s golf) the ball was never more than 5 feet from the spot it landed, proof positive that the ball was coming almost straight down when it landed. I'm not sold on these clubs for the short game, even though I did chip one in from about 15 yards and nearly holed another one for par. For all the chips I had over the weekend, had I not lost my trusty sand wedge I would have done much better. The hot face sometimes leads to overhitting the short “in between” shots and chips around the green. Flop shots are also risky unless you have a very fluffy lie, as the thick clubhead is hard to slide under the ball. These irons do not get snagged in the rough like other clubs.Read full review
These are great irons to golf with. They are very forgiving and very easy to hit. They play like regular irons but look like hybrids. They help prevent "fat" shots and can be extremely accurate. I almost holed my approach shot on 2 different par 4s. The only downside to these clubs, is you can't play a "flop" shot when you are close to the green because of the wide soles on the club heads. Not a big problem, because the irons hit the ball higher and land softer than normal irons. Great clubs for the beginner to amateur players.
As a 20+ handicapper (I shoot 90-95 routinely) I have nothing but good things to say about these clubs. Most of the reviews here talked about the high trajectory, which is completely accurate. They make it easy not only to make contact but to get the ball up quickly. For a golfer like me, the high trajectory helps out a ton. I let my friend (a par/scratch golfer who nearly always has low, high-speed ball flight) hit my 7-iron several times and he was able to hit low, penetrating shots roughly 1 out of 3 attempts. My point is that these irons truly are designed to fly high, even with proper ball-striking. If you don't play regularly and/or are a beginner, these are truly great clubs and very easy to hit high and straight.
I'm a 30+ handicap golfer and I play 1 to 2 times per month, I currently play a hand-me-down set of Callaways that have to be 20 years old. I usually just play to spend time with my friends and all of them have $1,500.00 to drop on a set of golf clubs. So needless to say I've spent about the last year getting my seat handed to me every other sunday, and pretty badly. The first time out after buying these irons I shot an 88 and lost by two strokes. The second time out I shot an 80 and dominated all of my friends for the first time since we started playing together, about 5 years ago. Sorry about the long review, but if this sounds like you at all, then these are the irons you need. Its great to be to address a golf ball and KNOW where its going to land. The clubs do hit shorter than my old ones, but thats an easy adjustment. There is no way to hit poorly with these clubs. So far the thing I like best is that there is no club in the set that I dont hit well. In the past I would dread pulling my 3-5 irons out becuase I knew that I was waisting a stroke on a shot that probably wouldnt get 6 inches off the ground. I used my 3 and 4 irons well last weekend and I was able to get a ton of air under the ball. I know this was a long review, but Im so excited to know that Im not a bad golfer, I was just using the wrong tools. I cant wait to dominate again this weekend. Happy Bidding.Read full review
