Orianthi " Under The Influence" CD 1999
at 14 years old orianthi recorded a Demo/CD Produced by Peter Panagaris in 1999 in her home studio in Adelaide Australia this very rare CD ONLY 100 of is dedicated/tribute to her guitar legends as Carlos Santana. BB King. Eric Clapton. Buddy Guy. Freddie King & more :)
In 1999 at the age of 14, I recorded a 5-track demo at home entitled ‘Under the Influence’. As the title explains, it was a compilation of my idols music and one original track I had written as a tribute to Carlos Santana. I organized a massive mail-out to media and the music industry in Australia and overseas – among the recipients were Carlos Santana and Paul Reed Smith.
I left school at 15 years of age to concentrate on my music – actually I missed so many classes due to music commitments that my teachers suggested open-access college, a type of distance learning/home schooling. I continued with this for another year or so but it was so hard to keep focused on history and math when all I wanted to be was a guitarist.
One of my first gigs, in front of a capacity crowd, was at a club in Adelaide as a support act for Steve Vai in February 2000. I had never seen Steve play live and he quickly became another huge musical influence in my life. The gig was great with an audience of mostly male musicians. Steve Vai asked to meet with me after the show and we have stayed in contact ever since.
Other gigs I have played include; a guest appearance at the Adelaide V8 Grand Prix Legends Party with Australian Rock Music Legends, the Clipsal After Race Concert (audience of 20,000), a performance at Music Business Adelaide Conference, support for ZZ Top, performance at the Australian Tourism Expo in Sydney and the Coca Cola Redfest Concert in Adelaide. Following this performance I co-wrote and recorded a 30 second radio ad that was aired on the Austereo radio network nationally.
I spent 2001 focusing on my singing with a vocal coach. I also kept up my songwriting and put together a cover band to give me experience singing at live venues. I recorded another demo that was a little more radio friendly. My temporary studio at the time was quite small so I didn’t bring in a band this time – I sang all vocal tracks, played bass, rhythm and lead guitar as well as tracking the drums.
2003 started off on a high note, apart from playing gigs around town with my band, I realized the dream of a lifetime when I had the opportunity to not only meet Carlos Santana during his Australian tour, but I was also invited to join him on stage for 6 songs. This was huge for me and I couldn’t believe it had happened.
I continued with the cover band for a few months and then decided to concentrate on getting my career started overseas. I was invited by Paul Reed Smith to attend NAMM in Anaheim in January 2004 and play both the PRS booth and Industry Party. It was my first trip overseas and I had the best time and met the most amazing people. It was suggested to me while I was at NAMM that I needed a website which I now have at orianthi.com. I was also fortunate to meet Michael Molenda, Editor in Chief of Guitar Player. I had an interview a few days later in Los Angeles and I appeared in the May 2004 issue of Guitar Player.
I spent the next few months writing and recording another CD, which includes both guitar-based vocal songs and instrumental songs. I returned to NAMM in 2005 to play at the PRS 20th Anniversary Party
with Carlos Santana and Paul Reed Smith and had the most amazing time.
I was invited to play at the AMAC awards dinner in September 2005 on the Gold Coast and I was featured in four Australian guitar magazines shortly after.
In November 2005 I was invited to play in Japan for PRS Guitars at the Yokohama music trade show. I had a fantastic time over there jamming with Char and opening the PRS showcase.
In January 2006 I was invited back to NAMM in the US by PRS and I played at the booth and the PRS Party. It was great to be on the same bill as Al Di Meola, Pat Travers and to catch up and jam with the amazing PRS band.
This month I just signed with a US Manager and look foEward to dividing my time between the US and Australia!
