This advert is for 1 NBR rubber damping ring only of either 3.55 or 5.33 mm thick.

The rubber damping ring is most useful on turntables such as the Garrard or Lenco where there is a rubber drive wheel acting on the rim or underside of the platter. Damping rings are still employed today on new Garrard turntables which proves their worth as a sound reduction feature. Cast Aluminium platters will ring like a bell if undamped and the drive wheel provides a constant excitation which is audible. This resonance can be damped by the application of a tight rubber band to the rim.

For the strobed Garrard turntable two NBR “O” rings of 5.33mm thickness are recommended.  For plain platter turntables such as early Garrards or Lenco's up to four rings of 3.53mm thickness can be employed. I have maintained a permanent advert on E Bay for these rings since 2007 and have sold hundreds to enthusiasts all over the world. Choose the thickness you require when you order. If you want to buy 2 rings please see my other advert.

Normally owners of strobed Garrard turntables buy the thicker rings as they fit neatly between the strobe graduations on the platter. For Lenco owners and for smooth platter Garrards two or more of the thinner rings are often used, three or four are recommended. For GL75 tables you need the PTP top plate (or an alternative flat chassis plate) and 1 thin ring.

This is a copy of an e-mail from a satisfied customer:

On a 401 ~

As expected due to me previous trials and tribulations with flat drive belts I can assure you     that your “O” rings made an enormous improvement. At last no over decaying of bass notes, luscious mids and crystal clear treble. Not to mention the rumble which dropped to an unprecedented -30dB (unweighted). Pitch black silence in between the tracks of an LP. Better focus on stereo images.

Really a perfect match when using my Ortofon SPU cartridges, all of which have a mid/low compliance.

Trying some 78’s with the Pierre Clemant L6B broadcast cartridge (5 c.u.!!!), I was amazed at how much detail retrieval I was able to get and very little “needle talk” too.

On a Pierre Clemant DRS mono broadcast turntable ~

1 ring only stopped it from ringing!  A tambourine on the Mamas & the Papas “California dreaming” I had heard a thousand times suddenly appeared.

On a EMT 928 ~

You know it’s a beefed up version of the Thorens TD150, 1 ring only did the job. With an EMT TSD15 SFL cartridge my reference LP recording of Ace’s “Five a Side”, on the British Anchor label sounded like never before. Pinpoint stereo imaging and perfectly mastered bass notes. Also the level of airborne vibrations causing howling was reduced. Up to now feedback was occurring when the volume control was at 1 o’clock. Now I can go up to 3 o’clock. (and get expelled by my neighbours)

All of this cannot be said with the 80 character message eBay provides you with.      Congratulations for such a simple idea.

I will be happy to advise you on your particular needs so please do not hesitate to contact me.

Questions and answers about this item

Q: Would this ring fit a Linn Lp12 turntable ?
A: Hi It would fit but is really only of benefit to turntables which are idler driven. Mind you if you consider the claims made for a Michell Orbe over a Gyrodec you could argue that additional damping would be of benefit even... Continue reading
