I bought this RGV 250 (1998) about 6 months ago for $3,500. Was going to do some track days but change of mind this wont be happening with this bike.
The previous owner said the bike had done 4.8 hours since last top end rebuild. The bike does have an hour metre showing the said hours at the time – hours now 5.1.
He said the big end bearing was ok.
The motor does sound good. I did a compression test and both cylinders were 110.
I've taken the bike for a run on a private road and the bike went well. I did a plug chop at 10,000 rpm and the plug (front) was a brown tanned colour which is telling me the jetting is fine – top end anyway.
I've replace the fork seals, brake fluid and cleaned the power valves. The power valves are worn, but the bike is 16 years old. I replaced the bolts that hold the power valves in place with Hex bolts which will make it easier to get out next time for cleaning.
The rear brake was working find but on checking air has got back into the line. There is no signs of leaks but air is getting in so this will need to be looked at.
The oil injection has been removed. Do have the oil injections. The battery has been replaced with a battery eliminator. The choke cable is not connected to the handle bar mount and has been cut. The cable now sits behind the left side fairing. So you can't use the choke to start the bike when cold. The bike starts first kick when hot but cold takes a few kicks due to no choke – not sure why the previous owner did this.
Chain and sprockets all look good. Tyres are Dunlop Sportmax – batch, front was 5/2010 & rear 9/11. If it was me I would replace the tyres.
To my knowledge the bike is not a write off and was last registered in 2010. I have the rego label and plate that confirms this – bike was registered in Queensland.
The bike cosmetic condition in my opinion is in fair condition.
