Film creator V Ward seems to penetrate part of the world of a local Maori community with sensitivity, respect, care and humility, both as a younger 21 year old self and an older self 30 years later. The superstitious tradition of the community is laid open and vulnerable with its belief in curses, and the historical religious attempt of a prophet to lead his people modeled on Jewish leaders in the bible. The main subject being the life of Puhi, a woman wife and mother seemingly trapped within a curse that somehow explains repeated misfortunes that beset her and her family. The film shows her struggle for survival and near the end of her life her dedication to her last remaining child who has been diagnosed with mental illness as she cares for into him into his adulthood often praying throughout the day, to ward off further misfortune it is suggested. There is actual footage of Puhi and her son, historical photo images and a lot of dramatized scenes that all blends well to convey The story. The photography is artful and atmospheric and the entire production is honest and bares both light and dark aspects without heavily biased judgement to sway the viewer.
