SALMON GUM - DROUGHT HARDY, MODERATELY FROST TOLERANT - AND BEAUTIFUL GENUS EUCALYPTUS SALMONOPHLOIA

Eucalyptus salmonophloia, commonly known as Salmon gum is a medium to large tree, capable of attaining a height of 30 metres, and is one of the tallest native species in the Western Australian Goldfields region where it occurs naturally on plains and slightly undulating ground or well drained flats, and on hills at the extremities of its distribution. occurs in a 250 - 500mm per annum rainfall zone.

It has an erect form with branches growing upwards and outwards and develops a spreading, umbrella-shaped crown. The foliage is a deep lustrous green colour, giving the tree a burnished or lacquered effect. The smooth bark of salmon gum changes throughout the year, from a white, silvery grey colour in the winter and spring months, becoming salmon pink to coppery in late summer and autumn when the old bark sheds to reveal these new colours. Salmon gum has a life span of more than 150 years, and has considerable nature conservation benefits, especially as a hollow producing species providing vital habitat for native fauna. It is a good honey tree

It is drought resistant (rainfall in its natural territory is250 - 500mm per annum) and takes moderate frost - to about -4C.

Salmon gum grows best on fertile, neutral to slightly acidic, red clay loams over a clay sub-soil, but grows reasonably well on soils ranging from sandy loams to rather heavy clays and will tolerate a wide pH range from acidic to alkaline. Avoid saline or waterlogging prone areas.

It is easily propagated from seed.
