This is a Used Nera Worldphone; as the photographs show it powers up and acquires the satellite service as it should.

 

This Nera WorldPhone (Portable Satellite Phone) was designed to utilize the satellite services of Inmarsat. Inmarsat’s network of four geostationary satellites (parked approximately 34,700Klms above earth’s surface and equally spaced along the equator) ensure that this portable satellite phone provides high quality and stable voice communication across the entire space of the earth, with the exception of the Arctic and Antarctic regions.

The Nera WorldPhone Portable terminal consists of two main units housed in a lightweight and portable carrying case:

• The antenna and RF transceiver integrated into the lid.

• The Telephone Unit (and battery pack) that is detachable and rain resistant.

The WorldPhone uses a coax cable to link the two units together. The case is equipped with a handle for transport. The screw socket in the lid allows the antenna to be tripod mounted, or attached to a window using a suction fitting. The total weight of the WorldPhone is 2.7 kgs (including battery pack).

The WorldPhone turns off automatically once the battery has discharged, to avoid damaging the cells. It must now be powered from an external source for operation and recharging of the battery. The WorldPhone may be connected to an AC source using the Universal AC Adapter, or directly to a 12-32 V rated DC source. The battery is charged even if the WorldPhone is turned off. The indicator shading increases as the battery re-charges.

  1. Availability of Service for this Nera Worldphone (Mini-M)

 

Inmarsat first announced the closure of the Mini-M GAN Service in 2012, due to demand for the service and the operational performance of their geostationary satellites they chose to delay the closure until 2013. Again in 2013 they announced the delay of the closure of the “Land Portable” Mini-M GAN Satellite Service from 2013, to September 2014. Inmarsat have also announced that they will support the “Maritime” Mini-M GAN Service through to 2016, both the Land Portable and Maritime operate through the same Inmarsat infrastructure.

 

What this all means is that Inmarsat have officially stated that they will no longer supply services to support the operation of this satellite phone, after September 2014, making this phone redundant, or useless.

 

That stated; I would be pleased to introduce you to an authorized Inmarsat Service Provider who is more than happy to re-connect (known as activating the service) this phone to the Inmarsat Mini-M service and continue to provide connection services until Inmarsat actually closes the Mini-M GAN service, which at worst case is 7 – 8 months away. Or longer, should Inmarsat decide to delay the closure of the GAN service again.

This Satellite phone maybe a very cost effective way of fulfilling a short term remote communications need which you may have during over the next 6 months, or a very cost effective way of testing the use of Satellite Phones in lieu of HF radio services

1)       What happens after an item has been dispatched?

       The answer to that question will depend upon the type of delivery you have purchased, as follows:

 

a)     Full Tracking, Delivery Verification and Insurance.

First, you will be notified of the name and contact details of the Delivery Agent, to whom your item has been consigned for shipment to you.

You will be notified of the details of tracking number assigned to your shipment.

The Delivery Agent will offer a website where you will be able to check and verify the current location, status and overall progress of your delivery; once you enter your unique tracking number into their tracking system.

The tracking system will indicate when your item is on board a truck for local delivery.

If no one is present at the nominated delivery address, at the time of delivery, in most cases the item will be returned and held at the Delivery Agents local depot.  In this situation the Delivery Agent normally leaves a card under the front door of the nominated delivery address, notifying the occupants that they have attempted to deliver an item and no one was available to accept the delivery.  In this situation you will have to go to the depot of the Delivery Agent, present the card which was left under your door and physically collect the item yourself. Alternatively, you can contact the Delivery Agent and negotiate to pay to have the item delivered to your nominated delivery address for a second time. If an item is held at the depot of a Delivery Agent for an extended period of time for collection, in most cases it will be returned to us. Please Note: All re-deliveries are at the expense of the purchaser!

On delivery to the nominated delivery address, the Delivery Agent will require the full name and signature of the individual that physically accepts delivery  of the item. These are held by the Delivery Agent to prove that they have delivered the item to the correct address and it was physically accepted by an individual, resident at the nominated address.

Should your item mysteriously disappear in transit, the first thing that you will discover is that we will assist you to try to pressure the Delivery Agent to locate the item and ensure it is delivered. Should these efforts fail the next thing you will discover is that NO Delivery Agent will ultimately accept liability for any item they are consigned, no matter what pressure you place on them; ultimately they will simply walk away from all responsibility. At this point you will be very glad that you nominated to take out insurance on your item and we will assist you to complete and lodge your insurance claim.

 

b)    No Tracking, Delivery Verification, or Insurance.

First, you will be notified of the name and contact numbers of the Delivery Agent, to whom your item has been consigned for delivery.

After that you are pretty much on your own, all you can do is hope that your item is ultimately delivered as there are no mechanisms by which you can track the delivery of your item.

There is no mechanism to valid the name of the individual who physically accepts delivery of your item.

There is no way to secure financial compensation if the item fails to be delivered.
