Revolutionary 90 degree motherboard mounting from RAVEN RV01
Innovative 4.5mm aluminum unibody frame from Temjin TJ07
Foam padded interior for advanced noise absorption
Cooler Master HTK-002 High Performance Thermal Compound
Combining two of SilverStone's most distinctive computer chassis breakthroughs - the unibody construction of the Temjin TJ07, introduced in 2005, and the 90-degrees rotated motherboard mount of the RAVEN RV01 from 2008 - the Fortress FT02 advances both chassis construction and thermodynamics in a dynamic, streamlined design.
With the Fortress FT02, SilverStone engineers have combined the rigidity of unibody construction with the unparalleled cooling layout of the RAVEN chassis, adding a hot-swappable hard drive cage and an acoustically padded interior for maximum versatility. The result is increased structural strength, increased storage capacity, and whisper-quiet operation. Available in black and silver colors, its elegant outer shell is perfectly accentuated by the U-shaped unibody aluminum frame that not only provides unique styling, but also functional purpose.
The bottom gap from the frame to the main body actually serves as the main air intake area for its three massive 180mm fans, making it even suitable for use on carpeted surfaces. For professionals and enthusiasts looking to build a silent workstation or gaming machine with maximum performance, there is no better than the SilverStone Fortress FT02.

SilverStone has always been on the cutting edge of chassis design. Their premium cases are always pushing the envelope and, almost without exception, are lauded by both analysts and consumers for the build quality and feature sets that are designed into SilverStone products. Take, for example their Temjin TJ07 chassis with its unibody construction and the more recent Raven RV01 with its unusual interior design and superb cooling. Both of these chassis' were feature rich and well received, so what did SilverStone do next.

In SilverStone’s traditional fashion, the box is black with a large picture of both the silver and the black versions of the enclosure. This box is quite heavy weighing in right at 35lbs.Below the handles on either side of the box, we find the specifications on one side and an introduction and multi-lingual feature list on the other. The back of the box has a picture of the inside of the case along with the features being pointed out and labeled. The box is very large for a mid-tower box, but this is due to the Styrofoam that suspends it in place. This being said, there is no need to worry about your case showing up damaged.
We have the PSU strap, Manual, 2.5” drive adapter, PSU support bracket, cable/wire ties, two radiator brackets, screws and other hardware and a 3-pin fan adapter cable.
Just like its predecessor, the frame of the Fortress FT02 is constructed out of a single piece of aluminum. More specifically, the FT02 features an elegant U-shaped unibody frame that not only provides unique styling, but also functional purpose. It gives the chassis a design trait reminiscent of Apple’s Power Mac G5, with the exception of the two carrying handles and the front mesh panel. In this respect, the FT02 is an example of elegance through simplicity, offering a smooth aesthetic exterior that can only be fully understood by an Apple product designer. An added benefit of its aluminum construction is the added strength – the Fortress FT02 will not bend or flex when handled, assembled or transported. SilverStone’s expert product designers intended this particular this chassis to provide a sublime effect to its owner – no unnecessary complexity or sharp edges – just a smooth, streamlined, rock solid enclosure with subtle curves and ample space to house some powerful hardware within.
At the top-front region of the aluminum body are the Power and Reset buttons, complete with integrated LED’s for determining power and hard drive activity. SilverStone has also implemented a new sliding shell panel alongside these buttons to reveal additional I/O connections integrated into the chassis. These include two well-spaced USB 2.0 ports and the customary 3.5mm headphone and microphone jacks with motherboard connections for both AC97 and HD Audio.
Here on the rear of the FT02 is the filtered vent for the PSU.
The top of the FT02 is where all of the typical rear ports are located. All of the heat from the case is vented through the top. The power and reset buttons, LED’s , USB, mic and audio ports are on the top front of the case. The top panel and removable cover are made of high quality plastic that blends well with the rest of the enclosure. The cover is lifted off by grabbing the cover from both ends and pulling straight up.The ports have a sliding cover to protect from dust.
Here is a look at the top of the case with the cover removed. This is definitely something that takes some getting used to. All of the usual rear ports are on the top of the case. This is not the first case to do this though, but SilverStone did invent it. The Raven (RV01) and the Raven 2 (RV02) use the 90 degree motherboard design as well.
The side panels are removed by thumb screws that are under the top cover. The I/O ports have vented covers to allow hot air to pass through the top of the case.
The exterior design is minimalistic with a smooth, sleek look. The fit of the parts and finish of the exterior are top notch.
The inside of the case is painted black and does not interfere with the mounting of the motherboard standoffs. You can clearly see the gap between the bottom of the case and the bottom intake fans. This change from the design of the RV02 makes a hugh difference in airflow.
All of the interior surfaces that can accommodate sound dampening foam have been covered. The use of the foam, especially in cases with aluminum, definitely helps to control noise. The application was clean and precise.
There are a lot of hooks to help with cable routing behind the motherboard tray. The slim design of the case does require some serious cable management skills as there isn’t much room for larger cables. If time is taken, a great cable job is possible. The bottom of the case features two rubber pads.
SilverStone continues using the rocker style tool-less drive locking buttons. The buttons work well. The hard drive trays are vertical, with the first one equipped with the CP05 hot-swap bracket.
The FT02 has switches that can be used to adjust the fan speeds. The FT02 comes with only one CP05 hard drive hot-swap bracket. Additional brackets can be ordered if needed.
The three bottom 180mm fans are the same ones used in the RV02. The filters can be easily removed for cleaning. The fans have adjustable speeds and can be controlled by switches on the top of the case. Fans can be set for 700/1000rpm, 18/27dBA.
The top 120mm exhaust fan is one of SilverStone’s new golf bladed fans. This design allows quieter operation even with increased fan speeds. This fan is 1200rpm, 19dBA. To the right of the fan, you can see the fan switch cables for the bottom case fans.
The interior of the FT02 is very spacious. As you can see there is no problem when using large CPU coolers along with a pair of HD5970 GPUs.The install was easy and we found no sharp edges. The FT02 is heavy when empty, weighing close to 34 pounds, so with your components installed it could potentially be very heavy. With everything installed, we found the SilverStone FT02 to be a thing of beauty.
Taking a look at the opposite side of the case we find all of the wiring for the installed fans. With a little patience and care you can do a nice job of managing your cabling.Note the install of our SSD on the right side just above the HHD openings.
During the install we found some additional information that is furnished in the owner’s manual that we know will be of interest. We all wonder if our components will fit whichever chassis we decide on.With the unique design of the FT02 will also come some interesting component size measurements, or maybe we should say advantages. Here are the ones we found most beneficial:
CPU cooler height limitation: up to 165mm
Power supply length limitation: 230mm
Graphic card/expansion card length limitation: the FT02 will support 12” consumer level graphics cards (this does fit dual Radeon 5970’s as you saw)
Motherboard size limitation: Although the Fortress FT02 was not designed for Extended ATX motherboards, the internal space can still allow installation for a board with a width of up to 11 inches. Enthusiast motherboards such as the ASUS Rampage II Extreme (10.6 inches) and the EVGA X58 SLI Classified (10.375 inches) are wider than the standard ATX board specifications of 9.6 inches. Both the ASUS and the EVGA boards will have no problems fitting inside the FT02.
Optical drive depth and 7th expansion slot limitation: If the 7th expansion slot is used the maximum depth of for an optical drive is 193mm; regardless of use of the 7th slot the top two drive bays can only accommodate a drive less than 180mm deep. So, what does all this mean; if you have a longer than average drives such as a Blu-ray burner/reader you will want to avoid installing it in the top two slots.
Top cover limitation: The gap between the expansion slots and the top cover is 70mm. You might find that depending on the flexibility of your video cable that you will not be able to install the top panel. If you find yourself with this problem you can purchase a 90 degree DVI adapter which should provide a quick fix.
Positive Airflow Design and Cooling Performance
For years, SilverStone has strived to deliver uncompromised airflow performance value for its enthusiast customers. With a history in building full-size, all-aluminum tower cases dating back to 1999, they fully expect the company’s R&D team to have refined its manufacturing process and thermal design concept to improve cooling while keeping fan noise to a minimum.
Many performance-oriented chassis manufacturers usually equip their designs with several different types of case fans, each of which holds its own respective purpose for either exhaust or intake. As SilverStone explains, when the combined airflow of intake fans is greater than the combined airflow of exhaust fans, a positive pressure is created inside the chassis. Conversely, when the combined airflow of exhaust fans is greater than the combined airflow of intake fans, a negative pressure is created. The first two SilverStone chasses to incorporate this airflow methodology were the Sugo SG03 in 2007 and the Fortress FT01 in 2008. They have optimized support for high-end GPUs and filters to prevent dust build-up for longer service life.
SilverStone's positive airflow diagram
Fortress FT02 airflow pathways and ventilation shaft
The interior contours of the Fortress FT02, in combination with its dedicated vents, fans and pathways are exclusively designed to maximize positive airflow inside the chassis. Like the Raven RV02, it features three SilverStone FN181 180mm sleeve bearing fans that operate at 12V and are advertised with up to 100CFM airflow at just 18dBa. In terms of actual air pressure and noise levels, however, the FT02 includes three fan switches right under its top mesh to toggle between “High” and “Low” settings. In particular, the fan speeds can be toggled between 700RPM and 1000RPM and are generally useful for those wishing to maximize airflow where ambient heat dissipation is needed most, while minimizing fan noise from unneeded performance zones like a hard drive bay with only a single drive. In our test usage scenario, we set the center and right fans at 1000RPM to maximize airflow to our dual-GPUs and CPU socket area, and they set the left fan at 700RPM over the hard drive bays to cool a single 3.5-inch Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 SATA II drive.

Without a doubt, SilverStone has a winner on its hands.Taking parts of the TJ07, FT01, and the Raven designs adds up to one innovative and outstanding case in the Fortress FT02.
While the FT02’s cooling system is based on the Raven RV02 we found SilverStone decided to tone down the somewhat radical appearance for a much more simple design with clean lines that should be aesthetically pleasing to a much wider audience. As we mentioned, the FT02 will look great sitting on a desk in your home office as it will on any enthusiast or gamers’ desk. There just isn’t anything to dislike about a simple yet elegant chassis and that’s what we have with the FT02.
SilverStone has made a strong case with their “Stack Cooling” and “positive pressure” which was covered in detail. With the three huge 180mm intake fans providing active cooling with positive pressure you have the natural convection effect exhausting hot air out the top of the case. All this is made possible with the innovative design of rotating the motherboard 90 degrees thus the cool air blowing through our components and out the top.Today’s CPU and GPU offerings which are known to produce a great deal of heat will most certainly benefit from this new design technology.
We have to admit, throughout the reviewing process, it was difficult to keep in mind that we were working with a mid-tower case. The sheer number of features, quality of build and attention to detail makes you think the case is much larger than it actually is.Keep in mind that while being a mid-tower chassis you will be able to fit some of the E-ATX boards as long as they are less than 11" wide.
Currently listing for about the Fortress FT02 does command a premium price but as the old saying goes; “you get what you pay for”.
So to answer our question, “What is the SilverStone FT02 all about anyways?” It’s all about finding an enclosure that includes the best features that SilverStone has to offer from their award-winning TJ07, Raven RV02 and the FT01.And that’s when the Fortress FT02 comes to the forefront.Standing on its own merits the SilverStone FT02 is one of the very best mid-tower cases you'll find.
