Star of Military Merit, with lapel pin (Etoile du Mérite Militaire, avec rappel)

Five- pointed gilt metal star with ball-tipped finials, a laurel wreath between the arms, on laterally-pierced ball suspension; the face with a n upright sword imposed on a circular central radiant medallion with the letters ‘RCA’ (République CentreAfricaine), the arms of the star stippled; the reverse with a circular central medallion inscribed ‘UNITE / DIGNITE / TRAVAIL’ (Unity, Dignity, Work = motto of the Central African Republic) on a stoppled ground; some loss of gilding from age oxidization; on original ribbon mounted for wear in the French style; with original lapel pin mounted for wear. The Star was instituted in a single class on 8 November 1962 to be awarded to non-commissioned officers and other ranks for services rendered during their military career. This is normally for 13 years’ service or exceptional merit and it could equally be awarded for an act of bravery. The Star is not often found.
