After forty years in the business there is a lot we know.
Sewing machine problems - H/D industrial - We used Mitsubishi DY-253s, Singer K20s, and Pfaffs
BREAKING OF THE UPPER THREAD
If the sewing machine was working OK previously and there was no way the timing of the needle bar was knocked and it was threaded correctly, the first thing to look at is lubrication.
How long has it been since the machine was oiled let alone cleaned ?
The drag caused by friction is enough to effect the timing of the machine with regards to the needle and the rotating hook assembly timing, so first try oiling the machine. If this dose not fix the breaking of the upper thread, change the needle. With constant work the thread moving through the needle can cause the eye of the needle to become very sharp and then as stress comes onto the thread it can be cut by the needle eye. IF this dosn't fix the problem look to the timing of the needle to the rotating hook assembly'
CLEANING & OILING SEWING MACHINE (AT LEAST HOW WE DID IT)
I believe that you cannot over oil a industrial sewing machine, if they are not dripping oil the do not have enough oil.
Now before all the emails come flooding in, we always oiled (flooded) our machines at the end of the day. We put flannel material under the hook to take up the surplus oil and my morning the machine was free of loose oil.
This excess of oil helped to flush the workings of microscopic dust, the killer of sewing machines. We use to buy our oil in 20 ltr drums and we used "Air Tool Oil".
CLEANING THE MACHINE (EQUIVALENT TO STEAM CLEANING AN ENGINE))
I would use a plastic spray gun which was filled with engine degreaser (mixed with water to instructions.) I would spray all the mechanical workings to saturate them and then I would use another plastic spray gun filled with warm water and flush the de-greaser out. I would then use an air gun and blow all the water out of the workings and then the old WD40, go to town with it, I would then use the air gun again. Now oil generously.
I NEVER HAD TO BUY A REPLACEMENT SEWING MACHINE IN FORTY YEARS
