Album Notes

Since the early 1960s, FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama has recorded many hit (and non-hit) records, and although it wasn't the only studio in the area, it was the most durable and influential. It remains most identified with the music it produced during its first decade or so of operations, and particularly the soul records done there during that time. If nothing else, this three-CD, 75-song set is an extraordinary feat of cross-licensing, bringing together many tracks done for different labels by a wide variety of stars and obscure artists. It's more than that, though; it's a document of the evolution of a regional sound, usually associated with the heyday of Southern soul, though FAME also recorded a good amount of rock and pop that's also represented here to some degree. There are plenty of hits that would have made for a solid, single-disc best-of compilation: Arthur Alexander's "You Better Move On" (the first FAME recording to make a wide impact), Tommy Roe's "Everybody," Jimmy Hughes' "Steal Away," James & Bobby Purify's "I'm Your Puppet," Joe Tex's "Hold What You've Got," Wilson Pickett's "Land of 1000 Dances" and "Hey Jude," Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music," Aretha Franklin's "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)," Etta James' "Tell Mama," Clarence Carter's "Patches," Bobby Moore's "Searching for My Love," and (yes) the Osmonds' "One Bad Apple." But while it's safe to assume that most listeners interested in this compilation will have, or be familiar with those tracks, the real interest lies in the dozens of obscure cuts, some of them excellent, and all of them at the least interesting. There's the rare, withdrawn Otis Redding single "You Left the Water Running" (here presented in a longer, previously unissued unedited version); the uncannily accurate Supremes imitation by Linda Carr, "Everytime"; little-known outings by Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham, who are far more famous as Southern soul songwriters than they are as artists; George Soulé's effective early-'70s socially conscious funk-soul, "Get Involved"; and Ted Taylor's "Miss You So," sung in such a high voice that almost everyone will mistake it for a female vocal. There are unheralded items by artists more famous for hits they recorded elsewhere, such as Bobby Marchan, Little Richard, Irma Thomas, Clyde McPhatter, Mitty Collier, and Lowell Fulson. And while the emphasis is very much on soul by African-American artists, rock and blue-eyed soul aren't neglected, with not only hits by Roe and the Osmonds, but also Bobbie Gentry's "Fancy" and David & the Giants' neat pop-soul-rock single "Ten Miles High," which has exhilarating use of the then-new effect of phasing. There are also various unreleased outtakes, demos, and previously unavailable long versions, and even a song credited to "Unknown Female" in the absence of certain identification. Even a project of this scale can't please every soul fan or FAME scholar, as not every chart record or collector's item of note could be included unless the set were yet bigger. This does a superb job, however, of covering many of the essential bases, as well as mixing different styles, eras, artists, hits, and non-hits within its chronological sequencing. The liner notes are a production worthy of praise on their own merits: enclosed in a hardback 84-page mini-book with liner notes by several experts, the notes include detailed rundowns on every one of the tracks, and a wealth of vintage photos and memorabilia.
