I bought this book as a gift for an 8-yr old American girl. It was well reviewed in both the U.S. and in Holland, where it orignated, by the literary and library review journals, but blogs from American school librarians and children's librarians in public libraries ripped it apart...so I had to see for myself. Yes, the stories are a bit unusual and that maybe a cultural thing; this author's work sells quite well in Holland and other European counties. The illustrations are wonderful and the stories are...different...but I liked them. They do not have a nice, tidy, everything-is-explaned ending, but I like that in children's books; it should serve to make the child think and use her imagination...and that is always good. I think this may well be an example of adults thinking a children's book is lacking yet children like it. I found several blog entries where the "professional" didn't care for it, but her nice or grandson or other age-appropirate child did. I have yet to send the book to its receipent, but I'm betting she'll like it, too.Read full review
