In these days of rising prices and poor quality workmanship, lots of folks are doing things themselves. This book is geared toward those who want to build a home that is within the scope of their ability. Straw is cheap and environmentally conducive to home building. The concept of building with straw has been around for awhile. We saw some fine examples while touring the South West and were mightily impressed. This particular book was recommended and we were lucky to find a copy on ebay. We are very happy with the purchase. It is exactly what we were looking for because most of the work can be done ourselves. Outside contractors are not needed for the most part. The price per square foot is drastically reduced and besides, you can be at your creative best while taking pride in knowing the work was done by your own loving hands.Read full review
I love this book as it has many wonderful color photographs as well as black and whites and line drawings that are very detailed. This book covers the many different styles of straw bale house construction, from every aspect, in a language that is easy to understand. Very well written, super for professional and owner-builders alike!
The book gives a detailed overview of all of the elements that go into putting up a Straw Bale house starting with material selection, progressing through foundations, walls, windows, doors, roofs, care, etc., etc. I especially like the fact that color pictures were included of finished products, along with black and whites throughout the book illustrating technique, style, use, etc. Also, at the end of the book there was a chapter showing some floor plans that mentioned detailed build plans available from the different designers to give you an idea of how it all goes together on the inside. The appendix lists contact information on all of the referenced sources, suppliers, architects and designers mentioned in the book. Be careful. If you haven't yet decided what kind of natural house you intend to build, this book may convince you to go with straw bale construction.Read full review
