A Shawnee friend of mine taught me to make these years ago.  In ancient times they were referred to as courting flutes.  Unless stated otherwise, all our flutes are made of western red cedar.  The block on this one is done the way many old flutes were done.  Whether you enjoy the beauty of simplicity or want to add your own decoration this flute is ready to go.  Sealed inside and finished outside  to be both beautiful and moisture resistant - comes with simple instructions. Key of F#  - easy to play mode. We  recently received an awesome note from an old time flute maker who bought one of these and was extremely pleased with it. Twenty inches long with 3/4" bore. Click on the store icon to see more of our flutes.

Notes For Beginners: This is a Native American Style Flute (NAF).  Obviously, they are open holed and take practice.

*First, be assured that every flute plays well when it leaves here so it should play well there.  The block (or "bird") is removable for cleaning so make sure it did not get shifted in transit - there is a light pencil mark on each end of the block center it between them.  Some slight adjustment may be necessary occasionally.

*Learning to get a seal over all the holes is the first step - the key is positioning not pressure.  Breath control is the heart of playing well.  Think "breathe don't blow".

*Most people use the first three fingers on the left hand for the three holes nearest the mouth and the first three on the right for the rest.  With all six holes completely closed off (takes some practice) breathe into the flute with increasing force until the flute overblows (an octave jump) anything less should let you play.  If you are uncertain you are getting a good seal on the holes, you can close them off with masking tape until you get the hang of  it.  Honestly, it took me a lot of attempts to get this consistently - it is almost always the heart of the problem when learning to play.  Stick with it - there is no other sound quite like that of an NAF.
