Background Info and Provenance
A VINTAGE Tessa T4 3-seater lounge sofa from the 1970’s in original condition. The success of this design has been everlasting and as a result, the T4 series is still in production today 43 years after the design was released. The superior quality of these pieces means the three-seater sofa retails new at around $4000 today. Supremely comfortable with a unique, interesting design, the Tessa T4 range is some of the most successful Australian furniture ever. The T4 combines beautiful Scandinavian styling with superior construction qualities. As a result the T4 has won a host of design accolades in Australia and incredibly in Europe as well- when you experience the T4 in person though it’s not hard to see why. Designed in 1971 by influential Australian furniture designer, Fred Lowen (from FLER), the T4 is his most celebrated furniture design and as such is held in the Australian National Gallery.
This is an early Tessa T4. It has one of their early labels under one cushion plus there are a couple of points pertaining to the way the cushions are done that verify the piece is early- definitely 1970’s, most likely early to mid-70’s. The good news with this is that the quality of the leather on this one is assured and far more superior than the leather used on many of the newer T4s. In an attempt to compete with the onslaught of mass-produced cheap furniture coming out of Asia Tessa later introduced an option where customers could choose cheaper leathers to save money. You get what you pay for and most of these new leathers are exactly that- cheap. Leather on some of the new T4s has disintegrated in years. Not so with this piece- this leather is of the highest quality. Despite being around 40 years old the cushions show little wear from use- this is your guarantee that this leather will continue to age gracefully in the future.
This colour is also great. Black can be bold in some interiors but this terracotta colour is softer and more usable in an interior with an earthy colour palette.
These lounges will not lose their value like new lounges and boast the highest quality construction. Buying vintage furniture that has stood the test of time is not only a smart financial investment but also one of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint and help our environment.
Condition and Dimensions
This sofa is vintage and is overall in excellent condition for its age. The leather and construction characteristics are superior. In a structural sense the timber frames are excellent. The timber frames also present very well- they’re about 40 years old so obviously have minor signs of use but nothing that spoils them. There are obviously grazes, knocks and minor wear to the timber edges and the finish- all to be expected.
The LEATHER upholstery is in very good condition for its age. This is 1970’s TOP GRADE LEATHER- not the cheap rubbish available these days. Unfortunately the top of the sofa has cat clawing. It’s not bad but certainly there. I’ve had various people use this sofa in my spare room at home and none ever noticed it. The cat was obviously not allowed on the sofa so the clawing is at the top of the two back cushions and on the seat cushion just above the floor. We decided to turn the seat cushions the other way (- this doesn’t affect the sofa at all). In this way you don’t see the cat clawing on the seat cushions. (The clawing on the seat cushions is the same as the clawing shown in the photos for the back cushions.) I would normally price this piece at $1495 so you’re saving a substantial amount because of this minor damage. If you had the two top sausage cushions re-upholstered the piece would then be in brilliant vintage condition. (This would cost a lot less to get done than reduction I’ve made in price. You could also use the leather on the back of these cushions and move it to the front. This would be even cheaper to get done.) But this is all not needed which is why it is being sold as is. The photos have been carefully selected to show the clawing as accurately and fairly as I can. When you’re a short distance away from the lounge it is not seen. And you have to be on a certain angle for it to show. Another idea is to have the lounge completely resprayed ...
Apart from the clawing the leather shows little signs of use- this is quality leather unlike some of the leathers Tessa used after the 70’s. There is a cut in the leather behind one back cushion but this is never noticed.
The netting on this sofa is in very good condition- the netting will sometimes sag over the years. I don’t think this netting needs to be replaced but you could get this done easily for around $300 through Tessa- this is to SUPPLY AND FIT. (That price was given to me back in 2007 when I sold my last T4 sofa, the price has probably increased slightly.) This information just lets you know that the sofa is a lifetime investment and can be serviced if needed. Personally I would just add in a cushion under the leather cushions and this would do the same thing and the cushion underneath would not be noticed because it’s under the lounge.
Some of the clips that hold the cushions to the frame are broken. This is standard with all second-hand T4s. They are not needed and not noticed. The cushions and the sofa are very comfortable and need no attention. This condition description sounds exhausting (but at least you know what you’re buying). This is a great sofa otherwise I would have never bought it. It’s high quality and ready to enjoy for many years to come. The Tessa T4 sofa measures 182cm across by about 85cm back with a height of 85cm. Read my 1000+ feedback comments (ALL for furniture and decorative arts SALES) to be assured that this lounge is described as accurately as possible and that I will not purchase items of inferior quality or with significant cosmetic flaws.
Pick-Up / Delivery Options
Pick-up from Lawnton (Northern suburbs- Brisbane) is more than welcome. I can organize a Brisbane-based carrier to deliver this item to your home for about $70-$100 (depending on where you are).
Specialist furniture freight is also offered throughout most of Australia (though for areas other than Sydney and Melbourne extra time may be needed to secure the best carrier/s). Careful estimates for Sydney and Melbourne are given below- these prices provide a rough idea as to how much freight will cost for other centres). These prices may change slightly depending on where you are and the carrier I am able to secure.
Sydney- to most areas of SYDNEY around $295 (with NO delivery issues- delivery in 2-5 weeks)
Melbourne- to most areas of MELBOURNE around $385 (with NO delivery issues- delivery in 2-5 weeks)
My freight fees include insurance. (Some freight prices you’ll get quotes for don’t). You are more than welcome to find you own carrier if you wish.
Please allow 2-5 weeks for delivery to SYDNEY and MELBOURNE, usually it’s faster than 4 weeks but not always. (It depends on many factors.) The interstate freight of individual furniture items is nothing like that of a removalist. I do what I can to keep each customer informed- I am working with a third party and their operation is not mine to control. If you have specific needs it is best to approach me with these before you bid- in saying that though, I work very hard to meet customer’s freight needs. When the customer has realistic expectations I can usually meet them. I will never claim to be a miracle-worker though! There is a lot more at work than just me on the phone!
Our preferred payment option is DIRECT BANK DEPOSIT. We don’t like it but we are forced to offer Paypal by ebay. We have run an ebay internet business for 11 years- our feedback is solid proof of what we’re like to deal with. In plain English on our shop-front are the words from our many customers- every grievance a customer has ever had with us (none) and every recommendation we’ve had (hundreds). You can’t get that if you walk into any shop off the street. Despite the unease ebay is trying to instill in internet customers so that they pay via Paypal (and make more money for ebay), the safest way to buy on ebay (and the only way to ensure a pain-free experience) is to buy from sellers with solid feedback. Ebay’s success was built purely on the feedback system, well before Paypal and its fees were invented.
The iNVISeDGE Story and Viewings
iNVISeDGE operated in Newtown, Sydney for 8 years. I then moved interstate and operated in Brisbane city for about 3 years. (About 11 years all up.) In 2013 I moved to the North of Brisbane. Click on the ABOUT ME tag above if you have further interest in the story of iNVISeDGE.
Viewings of furniture items will usually be possible- send me a question and/or phone number if the photos and description don’t meet your needs. Read my 1000+ feedback comments (ALL for vintage furniture/decor SALES- 100 or so are from repeat customers). I have had no negative feedback in over 11 years selling on ebay and this has been my full-time occupation. This is your guarantee that I work hard to describe all my stock as accurately as possible and will not stock items I can’t personally recommend- some items I acquire don’t end up in iNVISeDGE because they don’t make the grade. (I sell these elsewhere.) I have had furniture items go all over the world (sight unseen) and do everything that’s reasonably possible to make my customers happy with their choice to support my business.
