Vintage DUBEY & SCHALDENBRAND Split Second Chronograph Watch MOBILE INDEX. Circa 1950's. This watch model is very rare and hard to come by, truly unique design that contributed to development in watch technology. The watch is working and keeps accurate time, but the chronograph (timer) function is NOT 100% working - the start/stop button works but not resetting to zero. The minute counter (sub-dial at 3 o'clock) is not working. Good though, the split second (middle button on the crown) is working - arresting/stop when pressed/hold and catching on second hand when released. Sell "As Is - No Return".
Case Measurement: 37.2mm width across (excluding winding crown and buttons), 37.2mm length (excluding lugs, where bracelet is attached), 14.2mm thick (including glass).
The watch is in excellent like New Old Stock (NOS) condition , please look at the photos for more details and condition.
Here is more information about the watchmaker and this watch, an excerpt from Dubey & Schaldenbrand book: Georges Dubey, in his day a teacher at the reputable school of watchmaking in La Chaux-de-Fonds, registered a patent together with master watchmaker Rene Schaldenbrand on March 12, 1946, that basically comprised a little spring. This little spring was spiral in shape, winding around the stem of the sweep second hand and was part of a simplified version of a split-seconds chronograph. It's name, INDEX MOBILE, became synonymous with that of the Dubey & Schaldenbrand brand, making it famous almost over night. The "Peoples's Rattrapant" by D&S required no column wheel or pincerlike levers. Instead, a simple "brake" was used that allowed the split second hand to be arrested by depressing a button in the crown until the time reading had been taken. The second hand still running recoiled a balance spring that was visible and appeared to be lying on the dial itself, and that was hooked over the short ends of the two second hands. After releasing the button, a return spring ensured that the arrested second hand caught up with its "travelling companion: again. All very simple.
