|Country of Manufacture:||Japan||Age:||Modern (1970-Now)|
Single deck of red backed Matsui Tengudo Kobana hanafuda from the mid Shoŵa period, these date to around 1980.
Kobana cards were originally created for travel but they became popular amongst geisha due to their smaller size.
The cards can be used for many different games such as 88, Koi-Koi, GoStop, Patience and even used as Tarot.
Matsui Tengudo was the last producer of traditional handmade hanafuda in Japan, and since it's closure in 2011 the cards have become extremely rare and collectable.
Each card is completely handmade. The images are printed by woodblock, the colors applied via a stencil (see photos) and the 5 bright (20 point) cards have hand drawn details in silver.
The finished sheet is then cut into cards and each one is wrapped in quality mino paper.
Even though these cards are tiny, the materials and processes used are identical to that of the full size hanafuda.
This auction is for 1 complete deck of 48 cards (+1 blank) with red paper backing, housed in a paulownia wood box with gold embossing.
Cards measure approximately 2 x 3 cm, box approximately 6 x 5 x 2 cm.
Please check the photos to see the deck alongside a normal size hanafuda and a standard western playing card.
As new old stock, still sealed in plastic inside and out. Outer plastic carefully removed and replaced for photos.
