WHITE, John.

Journal of a Voyage to New South Wales with Sixty-five Plates of Nondescript Animals, Birds, Lizards, Serpents, Curious Cones and Trees and Other Natural Productions.

London: Printed for J. Debrett, 1790.

First edition, special issue with hand coloured plates, quarto, period full calf, rebacked with the original backstrip laid down, pp. [ii], [xvi], 299, [1], [36], with 65 engraved natural history plates with original hand colouring, bound without the two leaves of advertisements found in some copies, the list of plates leaf is in the third state and the leaves Hh4 (pp. 239 & 240) and Kk4 (pp. 255 & 256) are in their cancelled state, slight signs of use and foxing, a few leaves damp affected at the beginning, a  good copy.

John White (1756?-1832) was Surgeon-General of the First Fleet expedition to establish a convict settlement at Botany Bay. He became interested in the native flora and fauna of the new land and investigated the potential of Australian plants for use as medicine, and distilled eucalyptus oil in 1788. In November 1788 he sent his journal to a London and it was published in 1790. Accompanying the text were sixty-five engravings illustrating the natural history and products of the colony, drawn in England from specimens sent by White, with descriptions by English specialists. The journal describes many Australian species for the first time and the account contains many circumstances omitted by Governor Arthur Phillip and others. The long appendix describes the natural history of the new colony, the first major work of this kind.
