The History of Toothpaste

Toothpaste has been around for thousands of years, dating right back to around 5000 BC when the ancient Egyptians ground a paste for cleaning their teeth. In the early 1800s, when there were more powders than pastes, people experimented with soap and chalk. It wasn’t until the 1850s that an actual paste was made and in 1973, Colgate jumped on board and started mass producing what we now know as toothpaste.

Why Is Toothpaste So Important?

The role of toothpaste is crucial when it comes to the hygiene and health of our mouth. It helps to remove plaque that builds up on our teeth, as well as bacteria. Using toothpaste twice a day when brushing helps in preventing cavities and gum diseases. Toothpaste helps keep our teeth smooth, shiny and white.

What Type Of Toothpaste Should I Use?

There are a great many brands and varieties of toothpaste on the market. Dentists say the best toothpaste to use is a fluoride based toothpaste as it improves the strength of your teeth and helps build enamel. Its antibacterial properties help keep gum disease at bay. Some people's teeth are prone to hypersensitivity, and for those who experience, this should use a toothpastes exist hypersensitive teeth. Natural toothpastes are also an option. They are usually made from herbal extracts and other natural ingredients, such as powdered coconut shell. For those who want to concentrate on ‘whitening’ their teeth, other teeth-whitening products have appeared, some containing bleaching chemicals.

Bamboo Charcoal Toothpastes

A new trend in toothpastes are bamboo charcoal pastes which are toothpastes made with activated charcoal. Used for thousands of years, activated charcoal can get rid of deeper stains on your teeth, which essentially makes them look whiter. However, the use of charcoal should not replace the daily use of toothpaste. Activated charcoal and/or charcoal toothpastes should be used in conjunction with your toothpaste of choice.
