Author Bill Schelly has written an excellent biography of one of the most creative artists/writers/editors in the history of comic books. Extensively researched, even-handed in its approach to Harvey Kurtzman as a comics "genius", Kurtzman is also portrayed as complicated, contradictory, and completely human. In addition to learning a great deal about the creator of Mad Magazine, readers will also learn much about the early history of comic books, of Playboy, and of Jim Warren's magazines (Help, Famous Monsters, Creepy, etc.). I cannot give this book an any higher recommendation that to write that it is a must read for those who love comic books as well as for the general reader. Kudos, Schelly, you did great!!
