I was in the market for a waterproof hand held GPS for kayaking. The Oregon 400c comes standard with the coastal maps and is perfect for what I needed when kayaking the coastal areas of Florida. Reasonable battery life when in use and excellent easy to follow options for tracking your routes or marking waypoints. This little handheld has lots of features which I have not yet used but plan to in the future. The only downside I have found is the screen is a bit difficult to see in the direct sunlight. Also it would be great to be able to hook the handheld up to your computer and plot and save your routes for future trips. Still a great compact GPS. You can't go wrong with a name like Garmin.
I bought this as a backup to my gps. Took it to the keys and used it. It was awesome .charts are built in. Showed us reefs and wrecks . We speared slot of fish. Very easy to use with touchscreen. Glad I bought this . Although I already have lowrance and ray marine gps. This is convenient can take it on my flats boat ,kayak, or jet ski.
I geocache and love the way I can download all the cache information right into the receiver, doing away with several steps and other gadgets. Is very accurate. I really didn't need the water information, but the price was right. does use batteries up pretty fast, that's not a problem. could be a little more user friendly on reading recorded notes. a lot faster loading data with windows xp than windows 7. Garmin people are very helpful if you have a problem. I own 6 garmin products.
Garmin once again reads my mind, Like I said "Won't it be great if some GPS company would put coastal maps on a small handheld", And 'wallaha' Behold the Oregon 400c!!!! The Oregon packs a bunch of features into small package. In true Garmin form - It's very 'user friendly'.
Does some things well. Good magnetic compass, easy to enter way points. More difficult to construct routes because moving map easily changes zoom if you go over those controlls. Screen is rather small to use. Not unhappy with the unit. Will use it as a backup.
