Hobby RC Quadcopter & Multicopter Models & Kits

Hobby RC Quadcopter Multicopter Models Kits

From the smallest quadcopter to the largest octocopter, RC multicopters are becoming an ever more common sight in Australian skies. Whether you buy one that's already assembled or build it from a kit there are plenty of different remote control options for every interest and skill level. Most drones' classifications come according to their size and the number of rotors.

Australian Law

Under Australian law, anyone can fly a drone under two kilogrammes weight recreationally without the need for an operator's certificate or license. Property owners can also fly a recreational drone up to twenty-five kilogrammes in weight over their own land provided they follow certain rules, the most important of which is no commercial use. Pilots must also keep their drones in sight at all times, so the operator may not wear virtual reality glasses for a first-person view.

Quadcopters

Quadcopters are the simplest form of multicopter, with four rotors mounted at the corners of the machine. As the simplest and least expensive multicopter design, they make a great choice for beginners looking for an entry-level drone. The four rotors provide balanced thrust for both lift and stability. Many offer more than enough performance to carry a camera as well.

Hexacopters

The next step up would be Hobby RC quadcopter and multicopter hexacopters. Hexacopters feature six hexagonal rotors that situate themselves around the body of the machine. More rotors means more power, so these drones offer more performance than basic quadcopters. They are also more stable, and many even offer an engine-out capability, as they can still fly on five rotors if one stops working or suffers damage in flight.

Octocopters

After hexacopters come the big boys, Hobby RC quadcopter and multicopter octocopters. Octocopters feature eight rotors, usually four on each side of the body, although they can feature radial mounts as well. They possess all the advantages of hexacopters only more so. More thrust, more stability, and more cargo capacity. The extra thrust allows some octocopters to even operate in high winds.
