70s Horror films were a different breed as the genre evolved from Monsters to Aliens to Psychotic Killers. As usual, some were very good & some were very bad. Silent Scream falls somewhere in between. It's an atmospheric tale of a college boarding house with a dark secret played out around a very peculiar family in a typical "Old Dark House!" Silent Scream is best known for it's trailers with it's sinister narrator & his catch phrase; "Silent Scream! Terror so sudden, there is no time to scream!" This is not true as there is plenty of screaming! The movie progresses quickly & starts out with a glimpse into the future as a bunch of cops rush into the house & discover a few corpses lying about, shown at angles so you can't see their faces. Then the story moves on from the beginning, ultimately showing who the bodies belong to. The film takes place over the span of just a couple of days so things move right along. There are plenty of plot twists & misdirections ending in a predictable yet surprising, but not really scary finale. The cast has some star power featuring Mrs Munster herself Yvonne DeCarlo as well as 60s-70s horror icon Barbara Steele. It also boasts comedian turned politician Avery Schreiber & veteran character actor Cameron Mitchel. The DVD features a bunch of bonus material including interesting interviews with the 2 producers of the film with female lead Rebecca Balding + just an interview with Balding alone. It also includes 2 trailers, but not the one I best remember that made me want to see this film 30 years ago. It does feature some nudity & strong language so it is not a fitting movie for young children. All in all, this is a decent period horror movie for fans of low budget horror movies, but it's quite tame by today's standards. Still, it's worth addingto anyone's horror collection!Read full review
I have tried to purchase this flick for years!..It was released during the large rash of low budget 1980ish slasher flicks. This one however is a step above primarily due to intensity without the typical abundance of gore....One of "LILY MUNSTERS"(Ivonne DeCarlos) latter efforts...Video conversion is a little dull and dated but a movie worth watching.....A great effort by the main villain is convincing and intense!
A great, early-80's horror film, pre-dating the "Slasher" trash that followed; kind of a mix between "Psycho" & "House on Sorority Road" which came later. With good performances from Rebecca Balding ("The Boogens"), & horror veterans Barbara Steele, Cameron Mitchell, & the great Yvonne De Carlo, this is a taut, suspenseful film with realistic dialogue, likable characters, & very little gore.
