1st off, I love this movie. I saw it in the theatre when it came out in 1986. I have owned 5 different versions of this movie, 2 VHS tapes and 3 different dvds. I still own the 1 VHS tape that survived and the 2 prior releases of this movie on dvd (the Rhino release and the 20th anniversary sony/bmg release of the movie.) The 1st dvd of this movie that I owned was a Canadian dvd of the movie, because that was the 1st dvd version of the movie you could get, which i gave to a friend. This blu ray is 20th anniversary version of the movie with the extras from that dvd release. I bought this blu ray because this is the only blu ray version of this movie that is out there. This release was for the Great Britian/Australia area which would be region 4 players only. On this Blu ray the movie alone is region free, but all the other extras are PAL based formats, so you can view the movie in it's remastered glory, but the extras i still have to bust out my 20th anniversary dvd. It's the same exact special feature extras, so that wasn't a biggie for me. The vendor i bought this from was Australian and the price was insanely good, so i didn't care that i had to wait a month in shipping. The movie is amazing, I think I liked the sound better on the 20th dvd, but this has 2 different audio tracks to choose from so i have to watch the movie on with the 2nd audio track to be sure. The translation to Blu ray on this was great, the visuals & color is stunning and the animation is still amazing. If you know anything about the flick and were a fan of the cartoon, you know that the major difference with this movie and the show was the fact that some of the robots actually die, while on the show, they get hurt but fixed later and back to the action for the next show. This movie was actually the break from the original series into the newer series that takes place in the future with Spike being older with his son Daniel and Carly, but with only some of the original characters remaining (Prime, Megatron and Starscream are gone), many of the original generation 1 robots were killed off in the movie to make way for the newer toys from the line. This movie is also the last time you get to hear some of the amazing voice talent they had for the movie, that was then replaced later for the new shows. If you like the movie, get this release, but I've read on some blogs that they feel an American Blu ray will be released for the 30th anniversary of the movie. If that happens, I'll get that one too. I also think this flick is better than any of the new live action movies that have graced the screen recently. If you are a fan of the toys and cartoons like myself, go for it. If its for the movie, on amazon and even here on ebay. you're gonna find that the prices for a new blu ray or dvd are pretty much the same, $70 and up.. I love this flick, so i say go for it, and if you get a sweet deal in the price, even better, but if you want to see the extras and don't have a multi region player, I'd go for a used version of the 20th dvd, it has an episode on it in japanese called scramble city which is really cool, it's only audio in english is 2 people commenting on the episode and what is happening, but not a direct translation of the show, the reason it's cool is because that episode was never released in the US, and it has the 5 robot combiners teams switching with each other, decepticons combining with autobots combiners. They also have the japanese toy commercials, very cool.Read full review
