RAM, random-access memory is the computer's short-term memory that functions as a middle man between the rapid cache of the CPU and the slow storage of the hard drive. The RAM temporarily stores data that applications use as well as working parts of the operating system. It is not a permanent storage; once you shut down the computer, the short-term memory deletes. RAM Capacity

The different generation RAMs are not compatible because the pins are in different places, so you can only attach the type that your computer accepts.

RAM Transfer Speed

The number following DDR3 refers to the RAM transfer speed, namely, the number of megatransfers per second. In this regard, the DDR3-1600 operates at 1600 MT/s. Due to the double data rate of the DDR3, this speed is twice the I/O bus clock.
