Collecting Coins

When is 50 cents worth more than 50 cents? Answer: When it is a commemorative coin. Collecting coins is something that almost everyone has found themselves doing at some point in time. You come out of a store, check your change and find a piece that looks different in its decoration. Many eventually spend their new find, but for some it would go straight into a collector's album.

50 Cent Pieces

One piece of collectible Australian currency is the 50 cent coin. Over the years, commemorating different events through the release of special coins has been common practice. You can buy these coins online, helping you bulk-up your collection from the comfort of your own home. Some notable pieces include the 1966 round 50 cent coin or the 1988 50 cent coin, which marked the bicentenary of the First Fleet.

2 Dollar Coins

If you're looking for an alternative to 50 cent pieces, consider one with a higher value. In the past few years, a number of commemorative 2 dollar coins entered circulation. 2014 saw the release of a $2 coin with a green ring in its centre. This apparently rare piece observed Remembrance Day, and featured a dove and olive branch.

How to Present

One thing you don’t want is to lose or damage your painstakingly collected coins. Like many other collectors' items, there are products available specifically for safekeeping and easy viewing. Coin albums look like any other folder. Some hold slightly thicker plastic sleeves, with small compartments to fit any coin. Others are part of the collection, having spaces labeled that only fit the exact coins.

Maintenance

When it comes to caring for your coin collection, there are a few things you can do to make sure your pieces continue to look great and avoid damage. The process is simple and fairly intuitive. Firstly, avoid touching the pieces. This will prevent fingerprints from marring it. When handling, pick them up along their edges. Secondly, avoid using any sort of cleaning products, as they will dampen and scratch the surface. Lastly, keep them in an album and the album in a safe place.
