Buying a Bike
A bike is not just a bike. Bikes come in many forms, designed to suit all types of cycling. In order to find the right bike, it pays to find out what’s out there – and what works best for certain types of riding. Really, there’s no point buying an eye-wateringly expensive top-of-the-range mountain bike if all it’s going to do is meander to the local shops. Similarly, a bulky, heavy bike would probably not be suitable for an everyday commute that involves lots of stairs and travel on a train. Buying a bike that’s built for purpose definitely makes the most sense. It also reduces the likelihood that the bike will start gathering dust at the back of the shed because it’s just not suitable. When it comes to road bikes, there are a few options available. From standard road bikes, to cyclocross bikes, to flat-bar road bikes, these can offer a range of riding positions, while offering lightweight durability. Want to go off-road? Mountain bikes are designed tough, built to cope with heavy-going off-road trails, complete with a very low gear range for climbing steep hills. Mountain bike suspension options include those with no suspension (rigid), those with front suspension only (hardtails), and those with front and rear suspension (full suspension). Any other options? Check out small and sturdy BMX bikes for stunt riding, foldable bikes for easy storability, and electric bicycles for a well-needed push.
Invested in the right bike? It’s time to stock up on some biking essentials. To keep that new bike in beautiful working order, it’s a good idea to buy bicycle maintenance and tools, such as bicycle pumps and puncture repair kits. Meanwhile, to keep that brain in good working order, be sure to check out the range of cycling helmets and protective gear. Sun protection is also essential, especially in summer. Take a look at what’s on offer in the world of cycling sunglasses and goggles, cycling clothing, and cycling shoes and shoe covers – and slap on that sunscreen. Plan on travelling with the new bike? Car and truck bicycle racks are where it’s at. Last but not least, for anyone who truly loves cycling, it’s hard to go past some fantastic cycling memorabilia.
