CFL Compact Fluorescent Lamp Grow Light Kits

Creating an artificial indoor environment for growing plants requires extra care because you need the same kind of balance of different factors that nature offers. Indoor gardening mainly uses the hydroponic method, which means growing plants without soil and feeding them with a mineral solution. For the plants to thrive, they also need some kind of artificial light that would replace the sun. Hydroponics use different kinds of light bulbs as the grow lights and the compact fluorescent lamps are one good option.

Compact Fluorescent Lamps Explained

The compact fluorescent lamps, or CFLs, are an efficient alternative for incandescent bulbs. They are a subtype of fluorescent lamps, but unlike the incandescent bulbs, these lights do not produce much heat, so you do not have to worry about providing additional cooling for your hydroponic garden.

Using CFLs

The CFLs are available in a wide range of spectrums. The best range for vegetative growth is the blue, cool 6500 K. In the flowering phase, use 3000 K bulbs that emit a warm, red light. For the best results, use a reflector if you do not want to waste any light, as CFLs produce light in all directions. Comparing to high-intensity discharge, or HID lamps, the CFLs do not penetrate very deeply, so for growing large plants, you should have these lights at the sides and above the plant.

Benefits of CFLs

Compact fluorescent lights are much more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs. They use less power and have a longer lifespan, so you actually spend less when using them. As the CFLs require no ballast or complicated wiring, they are the perfect option for a novice hydroponic gardener. You just need to insert the bulbs into a mogul socket, and the garden is almost ready.

Other Accessories

You do need more than just lights for setting up a hydroponic garden at your home. You do need some hydroponic growing media, such as rockwool, clay, perlite or coconut peat. Other major essentials include hydroponic environmental controls like carbon filters for filtering the water, as well as ventilation ducts and fans for airing the room.
