Cottoning On to Cotton On
It’s safe to say most Aussies have heard of Cotton On, even if they haven’t all stepped inside a Cotton On store. Specialising in fast fashion, Cotton On is an Australian brand with Australian values. Has it always been fast fashion? Yep. Back in the late 1980s, Cotton On founder, Nigel Austin decided he wanted to get into the fashion business. So after picking up plenty of tips from his dad – who owned a manufacturing and importing business – 18-year-old Austin picked up a pile of acid wash denim jackets and headed to his local markets in Geelong.
Buyers responded well to the jackets – after all, acid wash denim was totally awesome in the 80s – but Austin didn’t manage to sell any of them. After talking the matter over with his dad, Austin returned to market the following week – this time, dropping the price. Result? The jackets sold out instantly. Austin realised what he had to do, and worked to create the fast fashion Cotton On empire that has worked its way across Australia. Selling everything from womenswear to menswear – all at affordable prices – Cotton On has also branched out to offer undies at Cotton On Body, kids’ clothes at Cotton On Kids, footwear at Rubi Shoes, and stationery at Typo. Not bad, considering that very first bad day at Beckley Market in Geelong.
